More Challenger Pics! Reply #17 – December 27, 2005, 06:54:00 PM Personally I think anything that competes with the Mustang and rekindles interest in the domestic industry is a good thing. The Mustang needs competetion to survive and improve, and the domestics in general (though more Ford and GM than Chrysler) need a serious shot of product injection. The GT500 is set to debut with about 475 horses, so it should be able to handle itself with any SRT8 version of a Challenger. The GT might have a hard time against an R/T at 300 versus 340-350 horses, but I've a feeling that li'l 3-valve 4.6 has a few more ponies lurking about. Consider this: The base Mustang will soon be powered by a 250-ish horse 3.5 Duratec. I can't see Ford giving the V6 car a 50-horse boost while leaving the GT alone. Also consider that the Challenger will likely be built on a shortened 300/Magnum/Charger platform, which is itself a previous-generation Mercedes E-class platform. While certainly a fine foundation, it is very heavy. The 300C and Hemi Charger are well over 4,000 pounds. Whacking two doors off ain't gonna lighten it up much, so even if it does maintain a horsepower advantage over the Mustang, the weight might negate that advantage (kinda like the previous GTO with 350 horses had pretty much the same performance numbers as a Mustang GT with 300)...
