It's that time of year again...

"Mummering" or "Jannying" has it is known in some localities, is a very old Newfoundland custom that dates back to the time of the earliest settlers who came to our land from England and Ireland. During the twelve days of Christmas, people disguise themselves with old articles of clothing and visit the homes of their friends and neighbours. The mummers cover their faces with a hood, scarf, mask or pillowcase to keep their identity hidden. Men sometimes dress as women and women as men. The mummers travel from house to house. They usually carry their own musical instruments to play, and sing and dance in every house they visit. The host and hostess of these 'mummers parties' serve a small lunch of Christmas cake with a glass of syrup or blueberry or dogberry wine. All mummers usually drink a Christmas "grog" before they leave each house. A grog is a drink of an alcoholic beverage such as rum or whiskey.

Am I the only one who still has shopping to do?

That's my family tradition. My dad and I always close down the stores on Christmas Eve.:giggle:

They do that down south a lot. Funny though, they do it all year round and sometimes burn things... hmph.

Can't wish ya all that in return.. I'm a staunch (you could say devout.. heh) Atheist. Also, I've been through way too much suffering in these holiday seasons. (father died just before thanksgiving, several years ago.. grandfather just died this year, two days before the anniversary of my father's death, and we just buried him a couple weeks ago.. and my cousin died a very horrible and graphic death during the holiday season.. not to mention I just lost my job last month) But I can at least wish that none of you are as down as I am right now. As much as I may joke around on here to try and forget about it, I'm pretty twisted up right now. All that plus my health is in the per right now. Hopefully these holidays of yours are treating you better than they're treating me.
