Flint to Ford: give us a Mercury Mustang

After a recent pre-Christmas party for the press at which Ford gave journalists a sneak preview of some redesigns, Jerry Flint sat down and wrote Ford’s head of the Americas, Mark Fields, a memo in which he aggressively goes after the company for making the decision to replace the aging RWD Lincoln Town Car with an AWD version. He predicts the move will see the Town Car driving down the same path as the Jaguar X-Type, in that customers looking for a RWD cruiser won’t be fooled by a FWD-platform modified to turn all four wheels at once.

We can’t comment on the Town Car’s new styling since we weren’t invited to the party (What’s up with that, Ford???), so we’ll get back to you on that when we see it in January at the Detroit Auto Show. We would, however, like to hear your opinion on another one of Flint’s suggestions for Ford, which is giving Mercury a version of the Mustang. It’s a move that sounds crazy enough to us that it just might work. What are you thoughts on a revived Mercury Cougar perhaps, based on the Mustang?

Wow.  Most of the comments didn't seem too supportive of the idea.  I kind of say I have to agree with them though.  Mercury has used the Cougar name on everything from luxo-barges to station wagons to an underpowered hatch-back wrong wheel drive coupe.  One comment suggested calling a Mustang based Mercury the Manhattan.  That sounds pretty cool as long as they make it look nothing like the 'Stang.

I've always said that a Mercury Mustang should have modern styling while the Mustang keeps the retro styling. That way Ford gets two markets with one platform...

If you mean something like what we had in the '80's with the Mercury Capri than I say don't bother. Don't get me wrong as I liked 'em but Ford won't do it again based on past experience which was a car that just wasn't a successful seller.

Besides....Mercury is a dying brand that a lot of people just don't care about anymore IMO. Hell....up here in Candada they don't even sell Mercury products anymore. We do build a Mercury product here at the Oakville plant though.....Mercury Monterey (Merc version of the Freestar) I don't think they sell very well in the US as we don't build very many of 'em......maybe 30 a day (out of 500)

Can't forget the Mercury Grand Marquis in St Thomas.

A car like the Messenger concept from NAIAS would be nice to have  ,but I honestly think it wont happen as sad as that is to say.

Even if it does we wont see it in Canada

I agree with Hawk on that one.  The capri didn't work out so well, why try it again?  They need to quit focusing on the mustang so heavily and bring some style back to their sedans.  Ford 500?  :yuck:
