86 Tbird High Output Alternator December 09, 2005, 07:04:05 PM I saw the sticky about alternators for my 86 v6 but I have a need for something with more juice. I'm looking at maybe a 130 amp or a 200 amp if one can be had cheaply. I know that the 90 amp bolts right in, but I was wondering if a universal bracket could be used or the case ground on or something similar to get something like a sn-95 130 amp alt to work. Any input is appreciated. Quote Selected
86 Tbird High Output Alternator Reply #1 – December 09, 2005, 07:14:39 PM They put the 130 amp alternators in a lot of different applications. Here is the list: (1994-95) Ford Mustang 5.0L(1994-00) Ford Mustang 3.8L (1994-97) Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar 3.8L (1990-95) Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable 3.8L(1993-99) Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable 3.0L(1995-98) Ford Windstar 3.8L & 3.0L(1991-94) Lincoln Continental 3.8L (1992-97) Ford F Series Pickup(1992-96) Ford E Series VanUnfortunately none of them have the correct offset mount. My guess is you would have to fabricate a custom bracket. Quote Selected
86 Tbird High Output Alternator Reply #2 – December 09, 2005, 08:00:15 PM Keep in mind the V6s had larger crank pullies than 5.0s. I measured my '87 crankshaft pulley to be 7.46" in diameter. The 5.0 crank is 6" in diameter. This gives a natural overdrive of 24%. A stock 95A 3G alternator will act like a 120A alternator. If you put an overdrive pulley (60mm to 44mm) on the alternator, you'll end up with a total overdrive of 85%. But, you'll likely send the bearings to Hades. If you want a 180-deg eared 130A 3G alternator to fit in your car, get ready to fabricate. Quote Selected
