R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell Abbott

Hard to believe a year has gone by already since the tragic death of the one and only "Dimebag" Darrell on December 8th, 2004. For those that are unfamiliar with the story, Darrell (of Pantera/Damageplan fame) was murdered onstage playing a concert at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio when a deranged "fan" stormed the stage during the band's opening song and shot Darrell in the head multiple times while he was playing. He also took the lives of 3 others who came to the guitarist's aid and wounded several others as he emptied a full 9mm magazine into the crowd. His rampage came to an end when he was shot and killed by Officer James N1ggemeyer when the suspect had taken a hostage and was attempting to reload his weapon. Police have been unable to uncover any motive.

This past December 1st, 2004.....I was at the Phoenix Concert Theater in Toronto with my brother and good friend checking out Damageplan for the 2nd time that year which turned out to be nothing short of another stellar show by the most bad ass brothers in metal music...Dime and Vinnie! Feeling the hair on the back of my neck stand up when they laid into "Walk" was a feeling I won't ever forget.

And then a week to the day later the news was everywhere that Dime was  gone. I remember walking into work at 6:40am the morning of December 8th when a fellow coworker told me he heard on the radio that Dime was murdered at a venue he was playing. I thought it was a bad joke so I got on my boss' computer to see WTF was going on. I simply ran a search for "Dimebag" on Google and the story was confirmed with vast posts on various news sites. I remember I had this strange numbness come over me as I read the story of what actually went down....I just couldn't grasp that this actually happened and that Darrell was gone at the young age of 38.

To this day when I think back on that show last year it's hard to believe that it turned out to be the very last time I would ever see Dimebag Darrell doing what he loved and lived for. It seems so surreal that this tragedy took place with not only the loss of Dime but the heros that were lost trying to help and the families whose lives were changed forever due to the loss of loved ones.

So today, take a moment to think about the man and then crank up some Pantera (if you got it!)

Dime and John Lennon both died on December 8th.

Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains singer) both died April 5th.

Life is messed up.

I saw Dime twice...once on the Cowboys tour, once on the Vulgar tour. Both times he was just amazing. After the concerts I'd go home, look at my electrics, and say, "Why bother now?" What he came up with, the fluidity between his brain and what his fingers subconsciously did, I'll never understand. Very few people can talk like that with a guitar. What a shame that he went so early, and to such an outstanding and giving person.

RIP Dime.

He and vinnie started pantera in the early eighties... RIP dime...  I would like to hear some pre-anselmo pantera, to me it would be like hearing randy rhoads playing on quiet riot's first two albums. :headbang:
