ignition switch? December 04, 2005, 11:12:53 PM '87 Cougar LS. Can start the car as normal. When running, the key has to be turned as far as it can to keep it running (not in the start position, just the on position). If you turn the key back a little bit, the engine shuts off. Could this be the ignition switch? It feels really loose when turning the key. Steering wheel have to come off to replace the switch? Quote Selected
ignition switch? Reply #1 – December 04, 2005, 11:34:37 PM No the column cover has to come off. Its on the right hand side of the column. Very easy. yours may need adjusted. it can slide back and forth on grooves. Quote Selected
ignition switch? Reply #2 – December 05, 2005, 09:25:46 AM Could just be a worn lock cylinder too. Quote Selected
ignition switch? Reply #3 – December 06, 2005, 12:12:34 PM It was the ignition switch. Had one put in this morning. Would have done it myself, but I didn't feel like workin' in the cold (below zero). Quote Selected
ignition switch? Reply #4 – December 06, 2005, 12:32:31 PM Cool, glad to hear it's better. Is the key still loose in the lock cylinder, or did the ignition switch tighten everything up for you? Quote Selected
ignition switch? Reply #5 – December 06, 2005, 11:27:35 PM It's tighter than before, but it's not "new" tight. Just a little play. Everything is working. Before I didn't even have power in the "ACC" position. Quote Selected
