90 Camaro RS

First I must say Its kinda fun.  But thats it.

I've got it right now fixing it for a friend.  She claimed it needed a tune up.  She was mostly right, aside from a few cracked vacume lines and leaks it was all normal stuff.

Now this car has a 305 with a TBI on it.  What an F'n tird of a v8.  Yeah it will spin the tires at a stop light but it doesn't have any more steam on the top end than my v6 cougar.  I've never seen such a well maintaned car make so many noises and drive so horrible.  It is all over the road!

I never really have liked F-bodys,  makes me want to get back to Ohio soon and get the 5.0 HO dropped down in the S.E.

Ok I'll end my Blog.

When I was in the Air Force my buddy Jeff had an 88 base model with the 2.8 V6.  It was the only base model in that body style I've ever seen with the factory body kit (the IROC one).

POS!

Well, me and Jeff used to work together and he had this thing for the drive through girl at the McDonald's.  That day I bought and he drove.  We order, pull to the window, and he makes small talk.  She says, "I like your Camaro."  He says,"Thanks, it runs really nice."

Immediately after he said that some higher power decided to mess with Jeff and the car stalls out right there (auto trans BTW).  I then proceed to laugh uncontrollably as this red haired kid with real pasty skin from Maine turns the same color as the lobsters that come from the same state.  That girl finally did go out with him but, they took HER car.....;)

I was looking at them before I bought my cougar.
I came across one 88 that was the RS, V-6, ground effects and dual exhaust. Just looking at it, it needed
paint, which was peeling badly,
ding removal, counted atleast 15 dings
new front ground effect, badly cracked
drivers side T-top, cracked
tail light- cracked
The interior was okay except for the plastic piece that ran the width of the hatch that was hanging down.

Driving the car
It was obnoxiously loud and didn't sound decent at all. Not even by v-6 standards of sounding decent.
The car pulled badly to the left and when you hit the brake, it darted over to the right. She claimed that tire pressures were off.
The motor surprisingly ran good and didn't make any weird noises. It wasn't fast but that was to be expected.

I told the woman I would give her no more than $500 for it which she turned down. She said she would take no less than $975.

To think I bought my cougar and had it inspected and tagged for that. I wonder if she ever got rid of it.

Well guys I've heard the main reason for the lack of power in those motors was the TBI units.  Now the IROC I drove one time was one with the TPI V-8.  Now that car was mean, had very good acceleration, excellent cornering, and overall was a very nice performance ride.  In fact I like the IROC's so much, I almost purchased one before deciding on a Lincoln Mark 7.  So I truly believe you guys tested some which weren't the typical of that model.

Actually it looks like you tested one that wasn't typical.

yeah...when i was i HS a kid had a "nice" one with the V8...whent on and on how great it was and how much faster it was than my car cause i had a V6. i didnt know anybetter but we ended up racing after school one day. i had my first car, a base v6 87 tbird. i figured what the heck and i pulled on him from the dig and never stopped pulling....those things are trash stock. alot of people thought my tbird was a run of the mill shiznitty ford (and it was) befor that. i got more compliments after that. months later i then got my first sport :)
he didnt want to race again, specially as i now had a V8...

Im a 3rd gen f-body fan, i always have been. I grew up around them, and always took a liking to them. If i didnt get my red bird, id probably have a thirdgen firebird, either an 87-90, or a 91-92.

my buddy got an 88 L03 (305 TBI) camaro, and the car wasnt fast, the L03 made something like 170hp, he ran something like a 16.70 his first run out. We put a catback on it, a chip, thermostat, open air element with a K&N, advanced the timing, and a bunch of other small things, and we got i believe a 15.90 out of it, for an L03, thats impressive

He wrecked the Camaro, and picked up a 90 Firebird, also an L03. Shortly after he got it, we did the same mods, intake, exhaust, chip, thermostat, and he drove it like that for a while, then he stuffed a torque conveter in it, and he ran something like a 15.60, which was pretty badass for an L03. After that, he built up an aluminum head L98 (TPI 350), and he kept having problems with spitting head gaskets, so he stuffed an LB9 in it (TPI 305), and ended up buying an additional firebird, an 88 Trans Am, with the LB9 in it. The car already came with a few mods, headers back exhaust, roller rockers, intake, gears, torque converter, and a bunch of random odds and ends, and the car ran 14.30's. Since then, we swapped in a 5-speed, put eibach springs, bilstein shocks and struts, and a couple little things, and the car handles like a beast, and makes decent power. I was actually impressed by how the 305 pulled all the way across the RPM's, it really shocked me, it felt faster than my TC, but it isnt really.

But since he had the 88 Trans Am set up for handling, he built his 90 Firebird for drag racing. It has a Jackson Auto Machine built bottom end, 383 stroker, some worked over AFR heads, Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley 650, and a little cam. We took it to the track on a py day on street tires, he ran a 13.60.......at 110.5 mph. The car has 12.40's in it in good air.

The problem with thirdgens, is they arnt built for quality, we're used to our luxury/sport cars, those are straight sports cars, they build them to be rather light for their size, and they built them to perform, and you cant have a performance car, without very high output engines, in big, heavy, quiet, comfortable cars. Look at the fox mustangs...those things are rattle traps. Even if we got HO's in our cars, they wouldnt be fast, theyd be mearly respectable.
It's Gumby's fault.

Since my first two cars were Firebirds I've always had a soft spot for 'em, but I can't stand the way 3rd gen's drive. I love the looks, especially the 90-92 GTA, but I just can't handle the rough ride - boneshakers, as a guy in my shop called 'em. They'll shake the bones right outta your body.

I'd like to get another 2nd gen (preferrably 77-78) Trans Am and put an L98 or LT1 in it. I wouldn't be looking for all out power, just the everyday drivability that TPI provides (if you could put TPI on a Poncho 400 for cheap I'd do that instead) and have the looks of the 77-78

eek...i claim ignorance on the chevy stuff...i just never followed the bowtie scene. i do balive the new Z06 is the absolute best bang for the buck, the best american sports car ever made. huge props for GM for that one. the new Z06 is allready being driven, in stock form into the 11s and running mid 120s on street tires with a fully factory backed warrantee. i doubt ford will ever touch that. in all fairness, the vette is in a completely different class than a stang. the ford gt is the only "sports car" spacific car ford makes and its not nearly the car a Z06 is. even if it was its still well over twice the money.

reguardless though, new for new, even if i had the money for the Z06 id still rather have myself an 03-04 cobra and pocket the other 35 grand...

the early firebirds and camaros always cought my eye growing up. in fact one was very nearly my first car. if it didnt have such a horrible ride and wasnt a rattletrap i might have ended up with it instead of my tbird. my dad forbade me against a mustang gt for a first car. the tbird rode nice, scooted, and looked like a mustang. im glad i made that choice...

my friends brother in law bought new a 98 or 99 camaro ss. the car screwed, and in general was a sweet ride. they are thus far the only 80s newer bowtie id ever consider owning asside from a grand national or Z06.
dont know why i ranted......but there it is....lol

A buddy here at work has an 02 SS that he just dropped an LS6 into.  It's a pretty  sweet ride.  The huge difference over the LS1 that he had in there is really noticable in the 2-3rd gear shift.  That was right about where everything was leveling off, and just evenly climbing in speed, but with the LS6 in there now, it's like the car got a second wind, and just gets up and goes.

I agree with the Z06 comment.  Those are badass cars hands down.  I've always liked vettes though.  The only other Chevy I've ever really been a fan of was the Chevelle.  My grandma-in-law had this terrible green colored 1970 SS Chevelle with the 454 in it.  I think she got it from the husband when he died.  Oh man that was a killer ride.  She was like the only old person I've ever know to just light up the tires, or gun it anywhere.  It was cherry too.  My mom divorced that guy, and I never found out what happened to the car, but I'd bet she still has it.

I have a 91 camaro rs convertible which is in great shape body wise and mechanically. My aunt bought it new and then sold it this way couple years ago. It has 63k original miles on it. It was definitely faster than my cougar when it had the n/a 3.8 and I think it could hang with but will be beaten by my brothers 95 z34 monte. The thing handles great though around corners and bends and what not, I wish my cougar handled like it. Ever since I was a little kid, I loved that car, I would look forward to family parties so I could see that. She hardly drove it and always babied it, had it covered and always stored. One family party my aunt let me take it for a spin and told me to take it on the highway and I had it up to 100 in no time and then when I got off, I was slowing down and she told me to speed up, took the offramp at about 55 and it huged so nice. The only thing I don't like about it is you feel every little bump or hole. I did race a 350z with it and manually shifted it and hung with him as he chirped in every gear. I was even with him until he turned off, I was in 3rd about to hit 4th at the time but if he kept going straight he would have been out cuz he was starting to pull a little at the time, I was quite surprised by that, he must not have known how to drive it. Another time I was sitting at a light and wrx pulled up, I was like shiznit I aint even gonna try with this thing but he took off like a bat outta hell so I just wanted to see if I could close the distance but had no such luck but that wasn't as bad as when I went to this ferrari show and it just so happened that an f40 pulled out the same time I did and went the same way I was. I pulled up to him just to see it drivin and to listen to it and he gunned it, sounded real mean, so I hit it and by no surprise the distance just got greater and greater til I couldn't see him any more, which was after a matter of seconds. I have pictures on here somewhere but can't find them right now, I'll take more once this snow clears up and also give you all updated pics on the cougar and my 88 blazer. But what I would love to have is my uncles 78 trans am. That thing is mint, used to be a showcar. He is the original owner and I think it has like 24k miles on it. Its gold(original paint), gold rims(original), custom bird on the hood which cost 10gs back in the day so I can just imagine what that would be now, has I think the 400 in it and he has 8 exhaust pipes, 4 on each side shootin out after the rear tires. He has won numerous times with that thing, has trophies all over the place.

Well I just found out this car has a bad idler arm. Yes idler arm. Another thing I dont like about F-bodys. No rack and pinion. Also this car has been halfed. I guess she got into wreck back in the day and had to have the entire front clip replaced. I think they ended up using v6 springs cause it is very bouncy! Even with brand new Ac Delco struts.

Also I own an 82 Trans Am. It sits on a budy's field. I pulled the motor and dumped it. It needs alot of shiznit done to make it worth driving. So I'm gona s it.

This car is falling apart. It has every little piece of plastic cracking and falling off. And its in nice shape. Basically my job is to fix all of the little things that are broken. Well I'de rather work on my Cougar. I had to jack up the car to change the spark plugs on the passenger side rear.

Why don't you actually read before you talk shiznit. This is what I said about the 350z.
Quote
he chirped in every gear.
People drivin normally dont chirp in every gear.
Quote
he must not have known how to drive it.
The only explanation on how I hung with him.

This is what I said about the wrx.
Quote
Another time I was sitting at a light and wrx pulled up, I was like shiznit I aint even gonna try with this thing but he took off like a bat outta hell so I just wanted to see if I could close the distance but had no such luck
In other words, i didn't want to race him cuz I knew what the outcome was gonna be and then when I saw him take off, I wanted to see if I could maybe close the distance but not even close.

And this is what I said about the ferrari.

Once again I wasn't tryin to race him cuz I mean who races a ferrari with a camaro or ne thing that isn't heavily modified. I didn't say I won any race nor for the ferrari or wrx did I even claim it to be a race.
