Ignition switch wiring

A previous owner of my 88 sport coupe had put in a remote starter and when my brother in law had it, it started giving him problems. Well the install job on the remote starter was pretty ugly :flame:  and it ended up frying the ignition switch so he replaced the switch and taped up the wires. Well shortly after i bought the car from him the gauges wouldnt work and it turned out that one of the wires had melted at the plug so i hooked the wire up to another one of the grey and yellow wires and it has worked for the last few months though i really would like to replace the whole plug. well now i have to replace the ignition switch and i was thinking about cutting the old plug out and soldering in a new plug. So is there a difference between the Sport Coupe wiring and the other models wiring for the ignition switch?
Thanks

Almost all early 80's to early 90's Fords use the same switch and harness. I think the only exceptions are the MazdaFords (Probe, Escort) and the F-series. The switches are a well published problem - it likely wasn't the remote starter that fried it, it probably fried itself. Ford was even forced to have a recall for most 88-93 models (pre 88 used the same switch but Ford was not forced to recall 'em due to their age)
