Snow/Winter/All-Season Tires

Who makes a good snow tire for a reasonable price? I had a rather bad experience this morning from an unexpected snow fall. No rear traction = no funs. -_- Granted anything with full thread will be vast improvements over what I got now, but this is my first northern winter (with a car and rwd!) and I would like to know you guys opinions on winter tires. I've been eyeballing these on tirerack.com. What do you think? Thanks.

Try a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's. Just had mine installed a couple weeks ago and they have been fantastic in the nasty weather we've had so far here.

Sam's Club makes about the cheapest snow tires you're gonna find (I got mine for around $40 each). But of course, gotta have a membership to buy them there.

All season tires suck in the snow, I've been there before, don't bother even trying.

Are studded tires legal in any of the states?

Studded tires are illegal? I didn't know that. Lots of people run them here. Granted, however, it's illegal to use them between April and October I think.

Darn right! B.C. central interior again, wana try alberta next :D

Is it seriously illegal to use studded tires in some states? thats insane (unless your in florida and the like) I dont think i'd ever drive another car in the winter without studded winters, besides they really scream when you get them spinning ;)

Are you running a separate set of wheels for these?  Or are you looking for something more "year-round"?

I've had good luck with the Sumitomo All-season perfomance tires for daily drivers that see winter use.  I 'm not sure if they are available any more, but the HTR+4 was a good all-round tire and did well in the snow (up to a point).  I had them on the truck's "winter" wheels and only got stuck last year when we had 10-12" of snow.  They were fine up to then though.  Only H-rated, but still did well when the roads were clear.

I had those on Darkthunder with the Cobra wheels. I liked them. Too bad they don't have any in my size. :( I want a set of dedicated winter wheels with snow tires, but i'm still open for anything at the moment.
