turbo issues..

-i'm back again.  some may remember i purchased a used '88 tc very cheap and wouldnt start,  have it running but i kept hearing a loud rattle from inside coming from below passenger seat.  thought it was cat/ler related, but found out it was the turbo:bricks1: took it apart and found the tubines and shaft just rattling around the housing.  needless to say i immediatley diagnoised the no power situation....:flame:  is there any reasonable rebuild kits or decently priced (<$400) turbos out there to swap in????any suggestions.....:toilet:

Parts for the IHI's are hard to find, and least for the version on the turbofords.  You can probably source a good used TC IHI pretty cheaply and be on your way.

You can do a T3 swap, but it may wind up being more involved than what you plan to get the car back on the road, even though you can probably find a decent used T3 as well.

The T-3 from a svo or older t-bird is a fair swap. make sure to get one from a 5 speed car as it will have the .63 exhaust housing.

You can wind up with a few "gotchas" on the T3 swap, and you'll either have to make sure you get an SVO housing or mod the others since they don't have the hose  for the IC that the 87-88TCs and SVOs do.
If you're looking for quick and easy (and cheap) I'd look for a used IHI.  If you want to mess with it a bit, them go the T3 swap route.

If you can find parts it's an RHB5 model IHI turbo.

However, if things were rattling around, I'd imagine the compressor and turbine wheels are toast.....

Hit the nato messageboards there seems to be tons of IHI's on there. lol. I plan on tossing my IHI out for a T3 but I don't have all the parts yet. Otherwise I'd sell you mine for uber cheap.

Also check Turboford. You should be able to get a good used T3 or IHI for less than $200.

However, you won't particularly enjoy dealing with the oil drain line.

That's one of the "gotchas"......
However, if you buy the Fel-Pro turbo gasket kit, if comes with the proper oil drain  gasket for the IHI...which is pretty easy to free from the turbo...

-oil drain line was no problem, piece of cake.  it was the oil supply line that was the problem. a whole week of pb blaster and the thing was still siezed in the connector and twisted up like a pretzel.  but can you believe there are plenty of new ones out there to be had(i work in Ford Parts) so finding one wont be that bad.... :screwy:

Well, it's just a piece of brake line, basically...
