'Gap' in 88 rear tail lights?

Hey, on my just-acquired 88 Cougar, while installing new bulbs in the rear, I see that there is no bulb to light up the space between the point where the rear lamp assembly and the side marker assembly joins together. Looks pretty stupid at night, if you ask me. Ford should have found a way to make the light appear continuous around the entire lense assemblys.

Required-by-law passive reflectors. Gotta put them somewhere.
