Veterans?

With today being veterans day...anyone a veteran or have family or friends who were/are veterans. My grandad was a drill sargeant during Korea and I had a great uncle who died in WWII. One of my gread-grandads was aboard the USS Utah as well. I also have several friends who were or are in Iraq. I think its pretty important we show our appreciation

for these guys, despite the fact that many people disagree on weather or not we should be in Iraq right now. Without guys like that who knows where this country would be right now.

Well I guess I am since I put a check mark in the yes box in every application I fill out, but I really don't consider myself one. I didn't do any of that brave stuff, hell my carrier (USS Harry S. Truman) was dry docked most of the time. But my cousin was in Bosnia, my granddad was in the Navy, one of my uncles was in Vietnam, another was a drill instructor and a lifer, and my grandmother's first husband was in WWII and was killed on his way home by a drunk driver. -_- These days it seems like people are taking the soldiers overseas for granted, it makes me want to puke.

But today we should AT LEAST appreciate them.

Heard that man. That sucks about your grandma's first husband...go through all that and then get hit by some drunk.

Yeah seems like people are more concerned about gas prices than whats going on over there (I guess its all inter-related). This is our generations war but its nothing like the wars of the past. It seems more political than anything and for the most part people don't support it...kinda like Viet nam in a way I guess. God bless those guys over there though.

I was Air Force for 5 years.Spent 14 months in the desert for Desert Storm in '90 and '91.I was a jet mechanic on the KC-135R.Made it to Staff Seargent before moving on to greener pastures.Good memories overall.My dad was a Marine in the 3rd Recon during Viet Nam

In the summer of 1949 me and a couple of my buddies joined the Naval Reserve. We were all 17 years old and ready to start our senior year of High School in the fall. The Navy took our Boy Scout troop on a ship ride down the Delaware River from Philly to Cape May and back. We joined up. In December we got out of school for two weeks to take a cruise to San Juan, PR. That was quite a lark for kids who had hardley been out of their own back yard.

The Korean War started on June 25, 1950 (my 18th birthday). Job prospects were not too good for someone on a short leash to be activated by the Navy. In December I joined the Air Force for 4 years. Luckly they sent me to England instead of Asia.

My Uncle Charlie served in both WWI and WWII. He went to France in 1918 with the Marine Corps at age 20 and was drafted into the Army in 1942 at age 44. Draft age for WWII was 18 thru 45.
My brother served in the Army in Germany in the mid 50's and another brother in the Navy on the heavy cruiser USS Des Moines in the Mediterranean.

Man I bet he had some stories to tell. My grandad is 78 and I love it when he tells stories about his days in the Army.

Uncle Charlie would talk about humorous stuff like when someone started shooting at him while he taking a dump and trying to run with his pants down.

Charlie was long legged and fast. In WWI they used him as a runner to carry messages. They always sent three runners to improve the odds that the messages got through.

, You have to go reserve or guard if you join over 27 now...

I did 4 years active Air Force and I am currently in the Air National guard. My grandfather was one of the many who hit the beach at Normandy on June 6, 1944. I never really did anything of that magnatude. My military job is that of an aircraft mechanic. I fix em so other guys can fly em......

Both of my grandfathers were in the Army. They've both passed away now, most recently in November of last year. My younger brother is an E5 in the Army now. He's been to Afghanistan twice. The first time as infantry and most recently as a CH-47D mechanic. He changed his MOS after he got married. He was tired of jumping out of planes and getting shot at. Can't say that I blame him. But it's amazing the stuff he's done and things he has seen considering he's only 23 years old.

Hey, my grandpa (on my dad's side) did that too. He was part of the Normandy invasion (Army) and I guess he was there clear through to the end, because my grandma talks about the stories he told of being in the Battle of the Bulge. Unfortunately I never got to know the man...he died of cancer when I was about 8.

My other grandpa was in the Air Force during WWII, but somehow he never saw combat. Instead, he trained pilots in Texas and a couple other states.

My grandfather (he's 90 and still going strong) was in the Army's 7th division in WWII. he was in the South Pacific and took part in the invasion of the Philippenes and Okinawa. He's told me some crazy stories about driving DWKS ("ducks" a 2/1/2 ton GMC truck that could double as a boat) through rivers and having them get hung up on plant life with some interesting results. Or the time that he slept through an air raid after being up for 36 hours straight. He's still going strong he cuts his own lawn! When was the last time you heard of a 90 year old man cutting his lawn? I salute him and all the vets today:america:

Both of my Grandfathers served in the Army - one during WWII, the other Korea. My Father served in the Air Force where he did two tours of duty during the Vietnam War in the 6091st Reconnaissance Squadron.

He was part of the ground crew for the very first combat mission of the SR-71 Blackbird as well as many top secret Air Force planes of the era.
