I may have to postpone this a few days. Hanging onto my bank account money because of the approaching hurricane, and I haven't received my new credit card yet.

You and your hurricanes, any excuse to not spend money :flip:

Joking apart, I've been watching this hurricane - looks to be a bad one. The most powerful hurricane ever on record! It had a central pressure of 891 MB, lower than the previous record Gilbert (898mb). And the others from the top four of all time are Katrina and Rita - been a bad year, and unfortunately, Bird351, it looks like it's coming straight for you, though there's considerable uncertainty in the long range track of the storm. A few models even have the storm stopping over the Yucatan and turning around and heading back south, and one even has the storm hitting Nova Scotia as a category two some time next week. I think there's another model that has it hitting New York City as a Cat 2.

One thing for sure: Wherever it hits, it'll suck ass...

At the risk of derailing the donation thread:

You need to subtract 100 mb from those numbers.. 981 would actually be a much weaker hurricane. When it gets into the high 800s is when it's scary. (before the 2005 season started, Charley was tied for 17th most intense storm, at 941 mb.. and that had 150 mph winds)

As for Wilma: It's unlikely it will directly hit where I live, Charlotte County. I see it slowed down 1 mph, which I think means it's even less likely to hit here. (if it sped up and hit that front they're talking about sooner, I think it would go further north on its eastward turn) However, I'll include an image from Mapquest showing my Zip code, (represented by the big red star on the map) and the path my current gut feeling tells me Wilma will take. (represented crudely by the straight red line cutting through the bottom of the state) We'll probably be getting hurricane-force winds, but only minor ones. Then again, as Katrina showed on the first landfall, even a minor hurricane (Katrina was a cat. 1 when it hit Miami) can kill. In fact, I think they can be quite brutal at times because (among other reasons) people assume that only a major hurricane can kill them, and get sloppy when a lesser one comes along.

Anyway, to tie this back to the topic at hand: I see my credit union has activated the option to use my new credit card.. which I may be leaning on a little bit in the next week or two. (more work clothes and shiznit like that) That means that I should be able to spare $25 out of the next paycheck (if all goes well, my first full-time paycheck from this job) to jump in on this. If for some reason we should lose power and communications for an extended period of time again, (which is VERY likely.. a lowly tropical storm a few years back had our house w/o power for 3 days.. and Charley had us down for a week, not counting generator power) and I'm unable to get back here in time to get in on the donation/raffle-like thing, maybe I'll just see about an outright donation at that time. I can't say I haven't received at least $25 worth of help from this place in the past year. Or maybe I'll dig up whatever it was that I was ready to pay you to fabricate for me awhile back, and pay ya to fabricate it, at a significant enough profit to be equivalent to a board donation. (or think up something else *shrug*) Whatever works.

Florida Power and Light snagged 50 rooms today from the motel I work for.. and the country music shiznit-fest we were supposed to host the people for has folded due to the storm.. so I know it's pretty serious here right now.. even if the gas lines weren't a clue.. but I doubt it'll be personally life-threatening, unless I'm dumb enough to get caught up on third floor at work when a 75+ mph gust hits.

OK, back to the donation stuff. If anyone wants to discuss the weather any further, feel free to make a separate thread. I kinda feel bad for derailing this thread as much as I have so far.. but hey, it is actually sort of on topic. :p (my reason for not jumping in yet)

Here goes nothin! Too bad the only thing i've ever won through the lottery system was a gerbil in 4th grade.

I'll bet you all another 10 bucks the person who wins is one of those lucky s who won a Cougar hat (or in some cases hats) at CJ. You lucky SOBs!

There ya go:

I can't say I've never won anything. Won about $40 off of a scratch-off bingo ticket, which was unusual given that I play that stuff maybe twice a year at most. Also won a South Park T-shirt from their South Park Palace trivia.. still have it, too. Won a game of Risk back in the gifted class I was in around fourth or fifth (I forget, it's the years of heavy drinking to block it out) grade. Think I still have that, too. Considering how little I involve myself in contest-type events, (I'm generally not big on gambling) I'd say I've done pretty  good. :p

OK, people, that's just f'n pathetic. 22 tickets?! Three of those are mine, and I've only been working an $8 an hour job part time for the last month, after several years of unemployment. Either Carmen isn't counting right for some strange unfathomable reason, or you people are slacking BIGTIME. With the exception of a few really knowledgeable people like Tom (who appears to have stepped up already) who already know much of this stuff, most of you people can't say you haven't got $10-25 worth of information out of this place. This forum claims to have 288 active members.. (out of 872 total) we're not even to one ticket in ten active users. Come on, people!

I thought it was pretty disgusting when, out of all the people I work with, I was the only one who thought to donate the available lost-and-found stuff to charity, (we're talking like 3 boxes of clothing, etc.) and I'm probably the most selfish person I know. This ranks up there with that.. and I'm kinda disappointed in the people here who haven't ponied up. Even if you don't need the prizes.. (and as an example, I'm one who doesn't need anything that's there to offer.. my Mark can't use sequentials.. I already put fog lights on it.. and I have no use for wigwag) this place is too useful not to fund to keep going.

Just bought my ticket. Wish I could spare more but I know I'm not alone when I say things are tough all over. Even if I don't win (come on sequentials ::drools::)) I've definately gotten more than 10 bucks worth of info from this board already.

Heh.. even with exchange rates, (if he's charging only US dollars) you got screwed just a wee bit. (by PayPal)

25 USD   =   29.2850 CAD
21.3420 USD   =   25 CAD
