GT-40 intake? WHOA

I went and got some HO intake parts yesterday...you know throttle body, injectors, upper intake, well I got them home and noticed the upper plenum looked different *she came off a '97 Exploder 5.0* I looked it up and found out it's a explorer/gt-40 intake...WTH? Why did they put a GT40 intake on a SUV?

I think it was to get the power to move the heavy little beast.Whatever the reason,I'm glad they did, because I got that Explorer intake and installed it on my '88 T-Bird (5.0 H.O.).I had to make a couple of small mods to do it,but it was easy, and worth it.I've seen the lower intake on E-Bay quite a few times. Also the phenolic spacer.I also installed one at the time of the swap. The car is running great.Other than a few little changes, nothing to it...easy.I'm getting ready to do a Tranny cooler install (from the V-8 Explorer...nicecooler!!!),and the 3G alternator swap Tuesday. All I have to do is slice the wires and bolt on the unit. One step at a time.

Same reason they put gt-40 heads on it.

what'd you have to change to go from the stock SO? also could I with the stock cobra cam, and flat-tops use the gt40 heads as a bolt on?

The heads are GT-40p's. I think if the explorer is like a 97 or newer, it will have these heads. Early 5.0's didn't.
But due to the way the spark plugs sit, you may have to get the headers that are specific for those heads. Some people say you don't but I'm not sure.

how do the explorer gt40 intake and iron heads flow compared to the svo/frpp aluminum gt40 heads and tubular intake?

IMHO...the gt40 tube intake is the best looking intake ever made for the 5.0....

if you use bbk un-equal length shorties they clear better than the fms headers that are for the gtp heads

And it'll look even better when I get my hands on one and paint it Metalcast blue. :p  (Metalcast red has already been done here, and it looks awesome)

To make it work,I had a hole drilled and tapped on the lower intake to accept the ACT sensor.Swapped the water pipe on the passenger side of the lower intake.Had to be a little creative on the vaccum lines and water lines, and also to the water lines to the throttlebody spacer.I also added newer Crown Vic 19# injectors (the skinny ones). They seem to work very well. The fuel rail, and everything else worked great, bolted right on.I have access to the heads (GT40 iron heads, not the "P" heads),but they're $150.00,and right now,I don't have $150.00.I'll get them though, the engine only has about 40,000 miles on it.I was told by a few different sources that the GT40 P heads do have a different exhaust header bolt situation.New headers would be necessary. My question is,as yours was, will the heads work with flat top pistons????????

The intake that came on the explorers was actually a modified Cobra intake.  If you found one with a GT-40 it was put on later.
