4.10 gears...

a friend of mine gave me the gears out of a '91 ranger that had the 7.5 with 4.10 gears...wondering if his bronco 4cyl 4x4 would have lower gears...4.10 is a lil extreme I think...she'd launch like heck *boom goes the 7.5* then probably have no top end?
'83 Cougar *the never ending project* warmed over 306 v8,c4,8.8 posi with 5 lug conversion
'91 mustang strictly street-in progress
'00 f150 7700-Mean Green: jet stage 1 chip, ported upper intake with 1" spacer,'04 Super Duty intake with injectors, summit racing short tube headers with true 2.5" duals with smithy's glasspacks!

the car actually picked up gas milage with the gear swap and i have no fear breaking the 7.5 even with what few things is done to mine :D

Got 3.73 gears and a traction lock in my 5.0 Bird. Seems to have enough giddy up. I think with 4.10s even with overdrive on the higway you'll be turning a rediculous rpms. My Bird with 3.73 gears turns about 2300-2400 at about 60 mph in OD. With 4.10s you'de probibly be turning over 2500 rpms in OD and have horrible gas mileage. And yeas by going with lower (numerically higher) gears you will loose top speed. But who goes 120 mph on the freeway anyways (I'm taliking to all you sane people  ;) ).

2,500 @ 75 mph here in od  and get 26-28 mpg doing it

3,000 @85?+ speedo stops at 85 and get 20-22 mpg

have any numerically lower gears...higher than 2.73s? might make trade...I'd like no higher than 3.55s...also are ranger rear end caps stronger than the t-bird 7.5?

You guys are a bunch of wimps.... Back in the old days we ran 4.30-4.56 on the street with no O/D. You ain't lived till you've buzzed down the interstate at 70mph turning 4000 rpms.

To tell the truth it gets old in a short while, not to mention the gas milage sucked. But then premium was 35 cents a gal...

Yeah I don't think I want to do that with gas at $2.73 for reg. I bet it sucked after awhile. The drone at 60mph in OD gets a little annoying at times but without OD I bet that you got tired of the drone in short order.

Well i have 4.10s with T5 and 28inch tall tire.
I get y gas milage seeing that i have 351 and it dont help i'm allways on it just for fun.  I buzz my motor to 3000rpm and call it good but it pulls realy nice to 5500 in OD and 4th to 6500 on spary to do HWY pulls with porsh's and other cars is just funny

86TBuzzard,
I've got an open 7.5" 3.27 under an '84 Cougar LS that is about to go for a little one-way trip pretty soon.  I'd sell it to you gladly, but you may have to help me get the #$%^& out from under the car.  Let's just say there's about 21 years of rust holding all of the nuts and bolts in place, pretty firmly I might add.  I'm not sure how bad I need another hernia.  Let me know if you might be interested.
