thinking about paint

alright..im fishing for opinions reguarding paint today. normally, id just do it without saying anything and hope for good results and a good reaction but what the heck... my tbird is black. the paint is in decent shape. i was originally thinking of painting below the moulding  silver and re-clearcoating the whole car. figured it would spiffin up the car a little without stripping the whole thing to paint it all a new color. i recently saw a 2000up mustang painted similarly with the silver painted all the way up to just below the side window, following that body line. the silver and black were sepperated by a red "pin" stripe. i thought that would look awesome on my car, following the high body line, painting over the moulding. i also thought a nice variation would be to instead of using silver, using the factory light regatta blue "silvery light blue" from the first tbird i had. i loved that color. i think that would be pretty nice. finally...has anyone seen the BFGoodrich adds with the 05 mustang done up by Chip Foose...? same burnt candyapple orange i wanted to originally paint the whole car eccept its topped off by black above the body line...very nice. so.....what do you all think :dunno: ? im torn...

I like the idea of painting the car from the pinstripe down. Don't know if I would paint it the silver or the blue though.
Probably silver separated from the black by a blue stripe.

Basically my factory paint job was black just down below the window line, about 1.5", then the metalic gray on down with the black moulding.  It had the black/red/black pen stripe with the metalic gray between the red and black.  I love that paint scheme and when I get mine repainted it's going back to factory colors.  I don't know if it would look just as good on your 88 or not.  I personally do not like painting the moulding the same color as the body.  It seems to me a great place to make an accent not to blend.  I have seen cars with the moulding painted and it looks good but I generally think it would look better painted a diff. color.

I like your idea, but here's a suggestion: Paint from the bottom of the trim down the Light Regatta Blue, then take out the chrome and put in a bright medium blue color as the trim accent. I've seen tons of 2-toned Birds/Cats at the pinstripe bodyline, and I hated all of them. I think the Black/LRBlue combo is awesome though.

Seen the ads  and I dig the color.  If I were to do an 87-88 bird or cat in that color I would make the car chromeless.  Maybe do the whole car in the orange and all the trim in black.....

yeah...thats the one.  i think it looks sweet.

im with you on the chrome. im so not a fan of chrome. generally, i think it looks tacky on the body of a car. whatever chrome my car did have is painted over. thanks for postin the pic BTW...

yeah. i think it would work well weather it be black with the light blue, silver or the burnt candy orange. it would look something like this dudes car minus the louvers, chrome etc...

heck, even the grey he has looks good. i guess its a matter of wich body line to follow, weather or not to paint the moulding and wich color.

How bout sliver over grey with a silver/grey/red/grey/silver pinstripe like mine (sorry pics kinda big). You guy think that a red insert instead of the chrome one would look good on my Bird? If so where can I get some 3M 3/4" red pinstriping tape?

that looks sweet but, if im not mistaken, thats a factory paint scheeme. i realy like my paint and its in great shape actually. originally i just wanted to wetsand it and get a few coats of clear on just to make it new again. its all black now. i decided i wanted something that stands out a little more being as id be going through the hassle of sanding and painting etc...i dunno...

as far as your trim goes aerobird motorsports sells correct trim for the moulding as well as a ton of other colors...mine is blue...

Yeah it's factory paint. I was just trying to give you an idea of how a tue tone Bird looks. I didn't even know that I could get new trim inserts. I didn't know that the inserts could be easily changed. How do you change them? I'm afraid I'll take the rub strips off if I try to change the trim  :hick: .

Wow makes a big difference! Looks good. What type of paint did you use? I thought that it would be hard for paint to stick to the chrome.

actually i used that new krylon "fusion" paint. i just cleaned up the strip by scuffing it with a scotchbrite and some alcahol, then i sanded it a little further with some fine sandpaper (forgot the grit) and then cleaned it with paper towels and alcohol till nothing came off anymore. masked it off and painted it. seems to be holding great. its been power washed from less than a foot away and never even budged. its pretty good stuff, i was suprised myself. i wouldnt normaly be one to admit i have krylon on my car...lol
