We have the technology to make hydrogen cars, hybrids, biodeisel (my favorite) and efficiant electric cars.  If the government told the car companies they needed this to happen and quickly it would already be done.

Fuel-cells aren't a mature technology, and bio-diesel can't be used as a mainstream fuel because there isn't enough arable land to produce bio-diesel and edible crops. Electric cars just shift the fuel from gasoline to (mostly) coal. We live in a mostly capitalistic society, thus technology matures when it is needed. High gas prices will speed development of fuel-cells. People will buy what they want. If people wanted better fuel economy, the market would give them what they want.

I remember hearing that the US had enough oil in reserve that they don't use, to run the country for like 75 years?  Can someone elaborate.
