Need advices : buying a 68 cougar

Now that is over with my insurance claim, I have these questions.. :

What should I check before buying a 68 cougar with a 289, auto?
I heard that those unibody are weak and tend to curve on front end... is it true?
What else should i check before buying? What should i ask the seller before taking a 5hr ride?
Does it worth the 4500$Can(Nego) he wants? I wanna offer him 3000$ for it (That all I got on hand anyway...)  :disappoin

Everything is stock (Except wheels)... 66,000 miles (he cant tell if original). He sound like a 50+yo and said he's selling because he have too much car to care of.... (He have another 1960+ car... I dont remember the make.)

check the structural parts of the floor pans,torque boxes,mounting points, check for stress cracking around window edges trunk seams, check for collision damage also.panel fitment will tell alot about the uni body structure as will how the doors close .

otherwise looks like a good looking car when i was on vacation down in daytona beach fla. i looked at its twin same wheels and all.

I read that if there is a Torque boxes or the known falcon (from 64½-70 on mustang and cougar) weak suspension prob, it will be a lot of trouble to do it... true?

i would also look into the cowl area down through the vents at the base of the windsheild.my brother had to s a 1970 cyclone gt 429cj ramair with air and automatic on column with buckets do to this problem.

Looks good to me and the price is right.  Check for cancer around the wheels openings, trunks, frame rails and floorboards.  1968 should have came with a 302?  but this is minor.  I think some of the chrome is gone around the wheels but if you like the look this does not matter.  I have not seen any bad torque boxes on a small block car.
Are you talking US dollars or Canadian?  Cougars are way under valued, if this was a Mustang it would be at least twice this much and you would still have the same basic car.
Buy it and have fun.

Yeah... and i've also read that 68 have a smaller front end than 67...
You were close... it's a 289 in it. I think its a Coupe model... not the XR7... (not sure)
It's in Canadian dollars and a nice condition in dealer similar to it are 9,000$-15,000$
This one is in a village... There is no city close within 1hr driving from there (5hr from montreal)... Maybe it's why the price is decent and no one has bought it yet....

After a month listed on the net, the owner told me that only one person called but never showed up.... (probably because of the distance....)

I'm still waiting for the insurance check from my wreck (checking mailbox everyday...)
I hope no one will steal my deal till then.... :P

He's in Jail. Where else would he be? We all knew he'd find his way there someday. :D



(he works at a prison now, so he doesn't have time for us anymore)

NOOOOOOO!!!!!! I feel your pain.

There is a blue mn-12 couger v8 near my house the is having some trans issues for 2k. I can take some pics, but I am in Lansing Michigan..

Under no cirspoogestances could a vehicle like this be totaled i would like to see any new vehicle do more than put a scratch on that whilst that particular vehicle walks away with a total fronend rebuild ect...
