Just what does kick over mean??? Are you saying it cranks but doesn't start??

assuming the engine spins,,

turn the key on till you hear the fuel pump shut off.
turn off key.

turn off key

walk up to engine , remove air cleaner , locate the thing that looks like an air fitting on the drivers side top of the Carb,, your CFI.
push in on the little pin,

-if fuel sprays everywhere, then you have fuel presure.

-check for spark- if its not blueish white,, its bad.  No orange spark allowed !!!

if no spark,,report back,, you are likely an EECIII system and IIRC, you have a crank sensor on that one year only deal.

being as your in Wa state, you may have a Carb'd setup ,,, instead of the green or blue top dual fuel injectors.

tell us more to include what tom asked in the previous post.

Note: If fuel sprayed everywhere, it might be best to delay the spark test for a while...

My old 83 cougar had a problem with temp sensors. If it wouldn't start I'd have to change the temp sensor. Might not be the same problem but it might be. That car was very particular about certain things

Finally,!!!!!!!!
my 87 3.8L once upon a time was having engine stalling resulting in crank but no start.

upon cool down somewhat it would start.  problem was the Coolant Temp sensor.
I think to this very day that computer had a bad or corrupt programming table because no one ever mentioned a problem like mine till today.
this happened like 20 years ago.  Perhaps it was operating as intended,,, dono

This is what gave me the impression back then that the computer will not allow spark to happen if the ECT reaches X values thus somewhat protecting the engine from self distruction.

I am betting someone smarter than i could look at the code and see this and i bet it was exclusive to the 3.8L.

Doesn't happen, EEC-IV computer has no control of ignition system... All it can do is add timing advance to the base setting, not possible to retard below base setting(in other words, no advance)... You could toss the 'puter in the ditch, the ign system still operates...

you'd still have spark with no puter?

fuel would be off but i did not know spark would still happen.

Exactly, no fuel control but spark will be there...

I've tested TFI modules on bench by supplying voltage to dist while spinning it with a drill... They'll spark even spinning dist by hand...

Going further, I'm driving a remote TFI module on my '72 Comet using it's original points dist for trigger, works like a charm...

Here's that TFI on my Comet, still a work in progress but I've put around 200 miles on it without issue... One jaunt down to NC was over a 100 miles total... I still need to pick up some fresh loom and install a connector to get rid of wirenut... Beauty of this install is the points carry no current so will never burn up and with a spare module on heat sink(that I have), if it s the bed the fix is easy... I've even run it with the TFI module still mounted on a junk dist, no issues... Module pictured is a dist mount with pins for PIP connector chopped off...

I had a Street Fire ign installed on it(pict in sig link) but it'd randomly go stupid, activating the rev limiter at any point it felt like doing so...
