Hi, its my first time here...

Hi, I have an 87 cougar ls and today I was stopped at a drivethrough and when I started to pull away I heard a loud sputtering type noise and it lasted about 10 seconds.  It sounded as though it was out of water, but that wasnt the case. It didnt start to overheat or anything.  I checked all the fluids and everything is fine. This car has been great, I have had no problems with it except I had to replace the water pump before. My car only has 64,000 miles on it. Please help if you know what this could be, it might be nothing, but i am no mechanic. Thank you!!!!!!!

It sounded like a loud shhhhhhhh noise with a kind of poping in it. Sorry that is the only way I can describe it. I dont know much about the mechanical part of my car, I just know that I love this car.

No I think it was coming from under the hood.  I hope it was nothing. I guess I wont get too worried unless I hear it again. I hope your noise is nothing major, good luck.

I'm guessing he was comparing the sound to that of a creaking door, not actually the door making the noise.

86Tbuzzard already said it, but it sounds like you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere...I know I had a vacuum leak on my car when I had this hose disconnected, and it made a noise like what you're describing.  Sort of a hissing noise with a few hiccup sounds, made the engine run pretty poorly too.  If it is a vacuum problem, the best thing to do is put your head under the hood.  Look for any disconnected hoses and see if you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from.  The only real way to tell, unless it is an obvious leak, would be to take it to a mechanic and have them check vacuum pressure in all the vital spots.  Hope that helps and good luck.
