I am currently turning my 88 tbird to a street legal race car. Hoping to run in the 11s I'm in the low 13s now. Mu question is I have a a o d tranny and I'm thinking about going to a c4 or c6 what one should I do and do I have to do any modifications to the interior or body to make it work

If you are going to tear into the transmission, check out clickclickracing.com. They have lots of good info on beefing up an AOD.

The C6 may or may not fit the trans tunnel so I would opt for the C4 if you do not want to do sheet metal work if that is the case.  There are a lot of things a person can do to a C4 to get it to handle some hp so research is a must.  I have a buddy that ran a reverse manual valve body C4 with a Neil Chance converter (http://www.racingconverters.com/) behind a 600+ hp 408W in an '86 Mustang GT.  He drove it on the street when it was nice out but pounded on it at the track all race season.  It would typically take one rebuild during the season which was mostly a clutch issue that I think they finally got figured out the last year he raced it.  I believe they switched to a different brand of clutches and that fixed the problem.  I think the biggest thing is finding someone who can build you a good C4 that is local so when it is time to freshen it up or if you have a problem you can deal with them face to face rather than mail ordering something.

Being that you are in Ft. Hood you are sandwiched between Ft. Worth and Austin so you should be able to find someone pretty easily cruising the Mustang boards.  With all of that being said have you thought about a 4R70W auto?  They are plentiful in salvage yards and they hold a bunch of hp and have OD.  Pretty good thread here on the Corral if you want to look at going this direction:

If you are going to drive it on the street keep the AOD, if it's a full blown race car, go with the C4 as it has less rotating mass so saps less HP... Few drag cars use the C6 these days, too heavy, and eats more HP than AOD...

Now if you are building a mud bogger, C6 is da the man...

I'm no longer in fort hood I'm in north Dakota and I plan I using it mostly for the strip while still enjoying a weekend drive.

Weekend drive and strip? Keep the aod build it. There is not much compromise between strip and road. maybe stick.

Sell the AOD for whatever you can get for it and swap a 4R70W into it.  Do the research on them as its amazing the power they can handle and they tend to be dirt cheap.  To build the AOD you are going to need a stall converter, shift kit, rebuild kit, and other not cheap goodies to get it where it can handle track duties propelling a 3400+ pound car on good tires down the track in the 11 second range and pull some street duty.  If you cannot build one yourself add that to the cost.  This is straight from Baumann's website "1998 and later 4R70Ws can handle up to 500 horsepower with just the addition of the Valve Body kit."  I do not believe AOD's can even come close to that in stock form.  So for me it would be find a 1998 and later 4R70W, shift kit it, get a converter, and install.
