Steering rack part # ?

Last night after work I went to Auto Zone to get a new rack for my 87 Bird. I want the Sport or TC rack with the 2.5 lock to lock. When the guy looked it up he said he has to know if its a 1 piece design or 2 ? Was there a design change in the 87/88 cars? The weather is bad here today so I may not get under the car to check until the weekend. So anybody have a part #  that will work? ( I will also be changing the pump as well...)...Thanks guys,  Ray

Is the one piece of two piece design with regards to the rack bushings that attach the rack to the K-Member?

I may be wrong but I think the guy asked if it was a 1 or 2 piece "housing" ? Again I could be wrong on that( I was kinda in a rush and didn't ask questions after that). Anyway, I will check into it more this weekend.

Did some looking and it appears that they are asking about the pinion design being a one piece or two piece.  I found the following to help you determine that but I don't think it really matters since you are wanting the 2.5:1 ratio rack and pump which most likely did not come on you car from the factory.

The racks that have the one piece design bushings are a little more difficult to put on than the two piece design.  If memory serves me right the one piece design come already pressed into the rack where the two piece you assemble which consist of putting the bushing in the back along with the sleeve for the bolt to pass through and then installing the front bushing.  Some leave the front bushing out until the rack is in the car so it makes it a little easier to install as it gives you some wiggle room.

If your car came with the one piece bushing design some have said that they punched the metal sleeve out of the one piece bushing and used it with the two piece bushings.  Do several web searches and this comes up pretty regular on the Mustang web sites.
