check oil light?

hey guys,

I've been posting alot cuz my car has been very ill recently, so sorry but im trying to resolve all these issues :).  I changed oil probably 1500 miles ago and the check oil indicator just popped on.  Should I just change the oil again or what?  the car sounds alright but thats a pretty alarming little light.  The gas light always stays on but to the best of my knowledge the rest of them work pretty accurately.  Any pointers as to what to check for?  thanks!!

:)  it seems to be at the right level, I guess Ill add some and see what happens.  I don't really think its leaking but who knows.

My car has higher mileage and eats a good bit of oil, as well as marking its territory.

Do you have the base cluster? Generally that's just an on/off sender. There is a low oil switch in the oil pan and another one in the block next to the oil filter

Low oil switch in the BLOCK???????????????????????????????????? In the pan yes but not to my knowledge in the BLOCK for low oil level. By the way those low oil sensors leak and i remove them all the time. Not sure if new ones are still available.

Is is a "Check Oil" light, or the oil light?

If it's just the Check Oil light, and there's oil in there, then the switch in the pan has probably gone bad.

Also, as kind of mentioned above, check out the oil pressure switch that is mounted on the block near the oil filter. The diaphragm in them can go bad and eventually start to leak. When that happens, the pressure from the oil can't close the switch to turn off the light. Sometimes, they work when the engine is cold, and the oil is thicker, but then give up once things get hot and thinned out. If this one comes on, you really shouldn't drive the car, until you verify that it *is* just a bad switch. This is normally the light that looks like an oil can, if it doesn't just say "oil".

If the oil level is right, but the light is on. Don't add oil.

All of this assumes that the car isn't making terrible noises while said lights are on...

well i through a quart in we'll see what happens

also realized that my fan wasnt running(i hot wired it to run all the time) so this could be some of the issue, the harness was a little loose.
