A sticky situation

..and no, I'm not talking about Shawn's keyboard. :p

Looks like someone re-sealed the windshield on my '89 Mark.. and were pretty sloppy about it. There's black tar all over the headliner where it meets up with the windshield. (and an odd spot of it down by the shifter) Unfortunately, since I bought a fold-up sun shield for the windshield the other day, the top of that sun shield has contacted the tar and is transporting it all over the car now. It's on other parts of the headliner, it's on the sun visors, it's on the back of the mirror.. I've even had bits of it on the steering wheel and halfway down the windshield.

I've thought about using a knockoff of "Goo Gone" that we have here.. but my concern is about possibly screwing up the headliner using something like that.. so I was curious to see if anyone had any tips/ideas for dealing with a mess like this. One or both of my T-birds will also need windshield sealing soon, (assuming I keep the '88 with the bad leak.. the '86 just has a minor, occasional leak) so hopefully I'll be getting a lot of mileage out of whatever I learn here.

I can't promise it'll work,but Castrol Super Clean makes short work of removing grease and any other foreign matter from my grey interior.I had my headliner replaced not long ago,so it may or may not work for you.As far as the headliner goes,what do you have to lose?Luckily they are cheap to replace,and cheaper to fix yourself.Will a straight razor blade take the stuff off of your windshield?One last thing,call a glass business that changes windshields and such and ask them what they use.You know they're bound to slip up somewhere and have to clean up.Good luck.

What do I have to lose? Mostly a pristine headliner.. which both my daily-driver Fox bodies have been lucky to have. Why damage something that's in better condition than it would be if I ruined it and tried to redo it?

A utility knife blade and the goo gone ripoff are probably what I'll use on the windshield. That isn't too much of a problem.

I didn't mean that in a careless way.The odds of not staining the headliner are slim.My new headliner cost $30.I pulled the panel and re-installed it.The shop applied the new liner.Take some of the  from the windshield and smear it on an old towel in a few spots and test each one with a different removal method.Practice on the towel before the headliner.

OK, good.. it seemed like you were advocating trashing my LSC's headliner.. which is honestly about 1 good vacuuming away from looking new, aside from all the tar  that's now on it.

I just want the stickiness of the tar to go away. I could live with black stains on a dark blue headliner.

Now I can't use that sun shield, because it seems to heat up the air between the windshield and the shield and cause that tar to melt even more. Found some more dripped on the rearview mirror and console, today.. so I folded up the shield and brought it in the house.
