AOD adjustment

Hi,

I have an '85 Ford Thunderbird which was originally CFI but I have switched it to carb (Motorcraft). I would like to adjust the transmission on it (it's an AOD) , but have run into a dilemma :

According to http://www.txchange.com/aodadj.htm, I am supposed to turn the screw in 13 turns, push the TV rod up from the transmission side, and then back off the screw 13 turns.
As you can see from my drawing, if I turn the screw in 13 turns, it barely clears the J-like plate, so if I turn it back out 13 turns, then the other steps in the abovementioned how-to do not affect anything since the J-like plate will actually touch the stop first.

If anyone has been through this or has any ideas, please help me out.

Adjust it so the tranny linkage is at full travel when the throttle is wide open....  If it shifts late/hard at light throttle then back it off till it shifts sooner.....
