Solved *NO* you dont just yank real hard- Turn Signal Handle

Its been said in the past that to remove the turn signal switch handle, you just grab it real good and give it a real hard quick tug and it comes out.

this may be true if you simply want to remove it but you do and will damage a part inside the mount.

I will get some time to post pics of this but essentially you will see a 1/4'' diameter pivot pin sticking out of the turn signal switch assembly.
you have to grab that with pliars and pull it out.
once you pull it out, there will be
1) spring
1) ball bearing bee bee thingy
next you can swing the whole arm around but it reveals two tiny parts that get lost if your not careful,... read on.....

as you remove the 1/4'' pin i mentioned above and small parts also mentioned, you will need to catch
1) plastic pin, side mounted 
1) tiny tyiny ass spring
--these two parts above are on the side of the holder which prevents the handle from feeling "wobbly" when mounted

as you continue to rotate the mount outward you will remove
1) 16awg in size pin that is about 3/8'' long
-- removal of this pin allows you to extract the handle.



esentially,,, remove the whole switch assembly from the car and bring it to a work bench with a white background cloth and be careful.

Been yanking them out since day one and that is fords advice on how to do it. Just saying!! GM is the same also. I have replaced hundreds in my career with absolutely no issues. Those switches burn up and when i slave them out i replace the switch and connector. I yank out the handle as advised by FORD.  The new switch does not come with a handle and all that you do is push the handle in the new switch. I personally have never broke a switch by yanking out a handle.  Have a great holiday guys.

Almost every ford colum I've played with from about 1980-95ish was virtually identicle.

when you pull out the replacement handle tom, does it pull out much easier...?

lol well I just had to replace my signal module a couple days ago and never having seen any information on what to do to get the handle into the new unit I guessed and just yanked it. It worked. I was out of patience lol.

I didn't look into it. I tryed turning it. That's why I have a post trying to get another one.

Actually i never gave it a second  thought as i said Ford says yank it out. Chevy also . I know it has a detent arrangement and as far as i know yanking it out is the correct way to do it. Not sying i am correct just saying that is how i always did it. All Data says yank it out on Chevys and Fords also. Have a great weekend guys

End result in my opinion only,
ford did not recieve correctly engineered handles.
The "Keeper pin" "should" move out of the way but can not due to the 90deg angle in the handle retainer groove itself.

So it is common for these to fail? The switch on my Ranger had 2 non functioning parts: 1, the turn signals wouldn't stay on in either position. And 2, the Hi/Low beam switch (the green piece) was all burnt up, so the headlights didn't work at all.
Current: 1986 Thunderbird, 105k 3.8/C5, 2 tone  Midnight Wine/Medium Taupe, wing windows, wire wheel covers.


Former: 1985 Cougar GS 115k Oxford White/Regatta Blue, 5.0, full console, 14" 8 hole aluminum T-Bird rims, Edelbrock valve covers.

failure rate unknown to me,
this one just failed due to the handle being broke,, that is very common.
