Clunkity Clunk

Another problem with my car :mad: .  I've noticed that my car makes a hell of a clunk when it shifts and at higher speeds (around 75 mph) has a hell of a vibration and noise.  My first though was rearend but in climbing under the car and twisting the drivesaft in neutral I hear noise coming from the tranny (which is the original tranny with 180,000 aggressive miles).  The only thing I did notice was that the rear does seem to have a lot of backlash in it.  I just don't know if that would cause the symptoms I have.  Any ideas?  The tranny was going before swapping rearends so I have to lean that direction.  I did take the cover off and inspect the rearend and saw no wierd wear on the gear.  Any ideas?

Do you think it could be the driveshaft U-joints?

Nope just replaced u-joints.  And it only does it if the engine is under a load if you are coasting it makes no noise.

I know what you mean by back lash but are you using that term for its official intended purpose?
if you mean,,,,,,,,, i have play where the Yoke enters the tail shaft then your looking at a tail shaft bushing replacement.

if you feel up and down play where the yoke enters the rear tailshaft seal/tail shaft (otherwise called the extention housing) then you found your problem.

go to my link in the "Greatest hits and near misses" section and look for my thread called "general car work and stuff".  In there you will see the step by step for the tail shaft bushing replacement including the "quick replacement" method by turbocoupe50.

tail shaft bushing cost is about 4 bux at the dealer.

you will need to inspect the yoke for wear also, if the bushing is absent,, you would have lost tranny fluid by now.
