I disagree.

My dad had me over one night after getting his oil changed on his van at jiffy lube. this was less then two years ago. his van was making top end noise constantly. I saw the ph8a fram filter on there. I pulled a motorcraft fl1a out of my trunk and traded the filter out without adding any oil or anything. When it fired up it sounded much better instantly.

Unfortunately my dad didn't listen to me about getting his oil changed there or using the correct oem filter. vans been sitting in the driveway because it makes so much noise now when you fire it up, it won't be long till something lets go.after having similar experiences over the years, ill stick to my $3 motorcraft filter over the $5 fram that I've SEEN hurt engines.

I may just make a video the show my point.I've got a fram oil filter on my tbird. never bothered changing it out in the 80k I've owned it. engine makes lifter noise on start up just like my dads low mile van did. ill bet with an oil filter change, it will sound fine. eats enough oil as it is with 250k miles of hard use, I see an oil change as more of a formality.

So how hard is it to crawl under the van to swap it out??? Till you prove another filter fixes the rattle, it's all supposition...

The OCD(orange can of death) bottom of the line Frams aren't a premium filter by a long shot...

Now I don't really disbelieve you, as I've had Purolator & Mobil 1 filters do same, both within a few days of last oil change(engines were 4.6)... I pulled them off and installed Motorcraft, all was good again... The Mobil 1 is a highly rated filter and two prior had no issues, third one surely wasn't the charm... I've heard other complaints on the Purolators, their quality appears to be slipping as well...

They used the "tough guard", the heavy duty $5 filter with the black  on the end. not the super cheap one, but not the most expensive one.

I know sooner or later someone's gonna give me  for not changing my oil, but the car eats 1-2 quarts a tank, leaks all over the driveway, and truth be told, I've been trying to blow it up. ever since I put the t-5 in, I almost always redlined it in 1st, every time I went anywhere. It didn't blow up, but I got a lot of things that need fixed, including motor mounts and steering rack. I plan to pull the engine and fix all that stuff and put my new block in with some goodies and some type of engine limiter to keep the mounts in place, or maybe get some chuckw mounts when the time comes.

The van, its an old 91 e250 hd with a 460. We are probably just going to get rid of it, as its not worth the 10mpg max we got out of it at best. my own honest opinion is that the cam lobes are probably wiped out since my dad only threw cheap oil at it. he also decided his dip stick was wrong and just kept dumping oil in it till it got quiet. its blown all kinds of seals and  now.

My Nephew (20), is a typical young mustang nut.  Drives his poor little car too hard too often.  Its a 89 with a anemic 2.3, yeah sad I know.  Anyway last night he locked it up driving home from work.  We found another engine and Im gonna drop it in saturday.  But...........I popped his hood and took a peek, fram filter.  Now I know it probably had NOTHING to do with it, more like the 20 year old that beats on it.  But Im gonna have to cut open that fram and see whats going on.  Kid wanted in the worst way to swap a 5.0 in it untill I named all the other parts he'd have to locate too.

Would be cheaper to swap in a turbo 2.3 then a 5.0.  From your synopsis, it sounds as if he may not yet be ready for that though.

My guess is there is a lack of oil in the pan...

What you mean people with leaky old cars don't check the oil level regularly and blow engines? Never ;)

V8, Its funny you say this, I found a xr4ti right down the road from his apartment.  Left a note for the owner to see if he was interested in parting with it.  Body is rough to say it nicely but it is still registered so hopefully a runner.  I know they have a turbo 2.3 but are they intercooled like the svo and 87-88 turbo coupes?  And will the clutch pedal assembly swap over?  Or do I need to find a fox three pedal kit?  Do merkur's use a cable or hydraulic for the clutch?  Guy hasn't called so probably not interested in parting with it, but hey can still dream.

Mine is a 1500hd, it has the gas drinking 6.0/4l80e  Boy will it scoot when you want it too though.

And 8 lug axles.  I love the 1500HD.  I work at a GM dealer, that is one of my favorite combos.
