ECU mystery box

I have a confusing situation here:

My friend was at a swap meet and found a guy selling Mustang parts, so he grabbed an ECU for me from a guy that said it was from an '88 Mustang 5.0.  (I'm collecting parts for an HO swap).  He drops it off at my place, and we are completely dumfounded by the code on it.

X

It says TB over where the code should be, but that doesn't match up with any code on the Old Fuel Injection website.  The part number is E6ZF-12A650-B2A-MR, but is also noted as a REMAN.

The closest info I could find was a PN search on Rock Auto that showed the PN as an equivalent to an '85-'86 Mustang, Capri, LTD, Marquis, and E series.  That's a pretty wide range of models, and especially confusing because the 5.0 in the Mustang switched from carb or CFI in 85 to Speed Density in '86, and any smaller engines weren't shared with the full size cars and vans.

So, help me out here.  What do I actually have or how could I figure it out?

Did you buy that at the Lincoln swap meet? From the two guys who were selling A BUNCH of Fox Mustang parts?

I've found Rock Auto's website has a lot of things that carry over in the way you describe.  As certain models of cars get older, the misinformation surrounding them grows.  It's amazing how much of this I see perusing NOS parts on Ebay as well.

Side note:  HOLY HELL there are a TON of different ECU codes for 2005-2010 Mustang 4.6 3v's!!!!!!

My buddy at a Ford dealer looked it up for me and he says it comes back to a 85-86 Mustang/Capri 2.3L non-turbo.

OP, if you can confirm the correct application for this box, and it isn't what you were told when you bought it, PM. I can put you in touch with the seller.

I believe that's the case.  Looking at the pinout, pins 12, 13, 14, and 15 should be connected to Injectors 3, 2, 5, and 6, and all of those pins are non existent on the computer's plugin.

Pin #1 is in the top right.

Here's the pinout diagram I used, it's for a MAF setup, but everything but the MAP/BAP should be the same I believe.

Jangus,  I actually have his phone number, my friend grabbed it for me because of some injectors he would sell to me too.  Maybe I can get those in trade for the computer. (I'll make sure they're correct this time too).  If I can't get him on the phone for some reason, I'll send you a PM.

Thanks everybody, I'll get it sorted out now that I know what I'm dealing with.

I found a couple ebay listings with similar numbers that said 85-86 capri, ltd and grand marqis. I wasn't aware of any 2.3 grand marqis having an i-4 so I guessed it was incorrect and didn't want to mislead you.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

The TAB & TAD solenoids have different pin out on SD vs MAF, but other than added pins for meter are same...

I'll say this once: It's more important to know who you're dealing with. Trust me. That's all I'll say about one of the people you bought this computer from.

If the ECM is not confirmed either by a factory number or a reman identification number BUYER BEWARE. This is why in most cases a stand alone system is normally your best bet or a known good and correct ECM NUMBER. Just me could be wrong. My ford guy says that ECM is a 4 banger i did not count the pins. How much did it cost you??? If it was cheap use it as a paper weight and chuck it up to experience.  By the way how do you know the ECM is GOOD. Even if it has the correct numbers and application the unit just might be a DUD??? Just a thought!! Never buy a pig in a poke. That is unless it was dirt cheap and you took a shot. Good luck!!

No need to lecture, this isn't my first car build and not my first mistake buying parts either.

I paid $40 for it, which is at least $25 less than any ebay ECU for a 5.0, but also about $25 more than someone should pay for a 2.3L ECU.  I took the gamble and lost this time, but it's not bank breaking.
