Fuel Pump. . .

Me thinks my fuel pump is going. So here are the symptoms
1-Start car on first crank then dies. Turn the key on to run the pump a few times, car starts and stays running. I can hear the pump running and it even sounds different than it used to.
2-Hesitation, sputtering and backfiring under load. Coasting down hill, cruising on level ground, runs like a new car.
3-Faint whine coming from the tank once the car is running. Not really loud but it's there.

I'm looking at the BBK pumps but am unsure if I should go with the 155 or the 190. Any ideas?
For anyone who has installed one of these, are there any complications I should prepare for before I begin?
Thanks.

sounds like my luck is rubbing off

make sure you get a pump with the install kit, comes with the sock, the oring, clamps, small hose, wiring pigtail, and then go over to advance, and get the fuel line retainer clips, like for the fuel filter, i do believe there are 2 different ones though for the fuel lines
It's Gumby's fault.

Pay attention to the ring that holds the pump on the tank.  Clean it off real good before you decide you "think" you know how it comes off.
The retainer ring on the tank needs to be rotated with a flat head or a punch so it lines up and lifts out.

the stock oring that seals your pump to the tank will need silicone that wont break down if gas makes contact with it.

You can buy a fuel pump for a Supercharged v6 cougar and come out cheaper.  they are about 95lph and will do fine.  total cost for my new pump was about 45bux.

empty your tank if you can using your old pump by grounding out the fuel pump wire up at the eec test hook up.

95lph is fine for a very mild build, but it all depends on how far he wants to go with the car, a 190lph would do great, seeing as Tom has had one in his car for years

If that isn't the truth. I started the car and heard that stupid whine and thought where did I hear that before?

Thanks for the input guys.
I think I'm leaning towards the 190 pump. I don't know how far I will be taking this thing but it's nice to know that if I decide to go all out, I don't have to worry about changing the pump again.

My current setup isn't all that radical. I wouldn't have problems using the 190 pump would I?
Don't want to go from starving the thing of gas with the bad pump to shoving too much down it's throat with a pump that flows too well.
Let me know if there's anything else.
Thanks.

That's where your fuel pressure regulator comes into play. If you have an adjustable regulator you could fine tune your fuel pressure to best suit the engine.

im running a 255lph high pressure pump with a stock regulator, and havnt had any problems, and youre probably putting down more power than i am

Ok, maybe I'll start with just swapping the pump first and see how that goes before I spend more money for and adjustable FPR.

Yeah, I met Tbird232ci and now I have to fix my fuel tank leak, coincidence or a curse?  :giggle:

I did the jcassity thing and used the pump to empty the tank.  Now I have a lot of gas for the lawn mower!  Even after the pump sucked dry, there still was a gallon or two in the tank when I dropped it.

Heres a pic of the tank dropped.  My leak turned out to be the fuel gauge sensor (on left/drivers side) .. Man, look at how rusty the pump and sensor hangers became.  Couldn't leave it in that state.

Here is a pic of the stock sensor and pump.  I'm still looking for the sensor.  :disappoin

That's right. We can blame all our fuel problems on Shawn :rollin:
