What year did these get a Check Engine light? Apparently, my 85 does not have one, even the owner's manual has no mention of it.

what cluster do you have

full buttstuffog
full digital
or the base cluster which only had a digital speedometer in the middle.

your check engine light is mentioned in the shop manuals... its used to pull engine codes by way of a simple paper clip.
the check engine light is located on the front lower left of the instrument cluster about an inch or so to the right of the E/M button.

shine a flashlight along the lower part of the cluster where your buttons are on the left side and you will see the yellowish lense.
you should have a check engine bulb illuminate by simply turning the key forward. ... otherwise its just  a simple blown bulb

I have the base cluster, you mean below the temp gauge? I do have the EEC connector under the hood. I just think its odd that the owners manual does not show/mention a check engine light on any of the 3 clusters at all.

Basically i do not Know. But a check of all-data tells me 1988. Sometimes All Data is wrong. I checked the XR7 with a 302. So according to all data 1988. But this might not be true.

I also checked the T Bird  Funny the 2.3 of 87 shows a CEL. But the 302 Does not. I am certain a 302 87 has one but All Data says NO. I guess you have to relie on some of the other guys that have these year cars. But All Data says NO. Beats me!!

mine functioned on my old 86 gs with a 5.0, and all 4 of my 87 birds/cats had one, two v-6's and two v-8's.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

100% all data shows that. But i think some 86 units that were CAL had them not 100% on this. It is funny how Ford lagged in compute controled engine management back then. Live data could not be monitored like a GM car. I think live data was somewhere around late 94-95 on certain models. And of course 96 was OBD2

PID monitor started around 92, with some models as early as 91.  But you're right, they were behind.

Yes i was not sure of the year. But like some V6 units were and some V8 units were not!! Now this is from memory but why did Ford do this??It boggles the imagination but it was what it was. Thanks for the actual year. I did not realize it was that early Foe. Thanks and have a great DAY!

An '85 would not have a CEL. They didn't show up until '87.

nope, we had this discussion about 6 years or more ago on easyboard,, tom bryant helped alot as well on nailing down the year.
the CEL showed up on e5 stamped 1985 base electronic clusters which was the first year for the electronic speedometer.

i have a couple 85 base electronic clusters here and all are provisioned for and wired out to illuminate a CEL display panel.

84' was the last year of the boring cluster which i believe was used from the 80' box fox to 84 aerobird/coug.

I'm torn on those 83/84 dashboards, on one hand, the gauges DO suck, on the other, I do like the symmetry of that dash.

One has to wonder why FORD does things like this. If memory serves me whenever one of these CEL LESS vehicles had a code Loaded in the ECM the driver and the mechanic did not know. So as many of these vehicles were driving around with stored codes for GOD knows how long. Once again an idea that boggles a mechanics imagination. Not to mention the fact that live data streams could not be read. Why would Ford design a system like this. So as computer control of engine management was the norm and Ford not showing the fact a trouble existed was NUTS in my view.
