Need some OBS silverado help

Anybody with some GM knowledge, I would like some help.:punchballs:

My 96 Silverado 5.7

My voltage gauge is reading much lower than normal.  I have a 2 year old Optima battery and a new alternator also.  The gauge is fluxuating between 14 volts and 4 lines below that.  It has never done this before, I have checked the voltage at the battery when it is reading low on the gauge and Im getting 13.8 volts at the battery.  I had the system checked at Oreillys and everything checks out fine???

Im not sure what else to check.  I don't know where the dash gauge reads from?  Any advice?

You need to bring the RPM to 1400 RPM'S. And read the voltage. It should be at or around 13.8-14.7. Normally when it is HOT outside the charge rate will be lower. In the cold the voltage will be higher. But it sounds like your alt is starting to act UP. Chevys normally run at or around 14 VOLTS. Hope this helps!!

Do you know where the stock voltage gauge reads from?

The stock gauge is just a guide...even when new...now that your truck is 17 years old might be bouncing around...with no problems... Do the test as Tom suggested...if good...then no worries.

The gauge is powered up by the cluster power keyed from the ignition. It should also have a charge light some do. And a check gauges warning system. Once again do some voltage readinga at various loads to see if your ALT is starting to go. Load the alt down with high beams heater on high and bring the engine up to APP 1400 RPM'S and read the voltage. Once again should be over 13.9 and 14.6 +or-
