Saying bye to my best friend

I've got to let my old girl go Monday, she has cancer. I've had her since she was a puppy, she was born on Halloween in 2002. She's a good girl, never had a problem with her as far as meanness or biting issues. She loves my kids and I've told them that she's sick and is going to die because of it. It was pretty sad last night...we all cried and cried, but I know in my heart it's the right thing to do...she's starting to suffer and I can't make her go through any more stress.

She's the greatest Pit Bull I've ever owned. I will miss her. X

I feel for you. I have been through one dog put-down as a kid, and one cat put-down as an adult. It's was very hard to handle both times. I know I would want put out of my misery if I get that sick.

Just be try to be happy for the time you got to spend together... Here, have a completely heteroshagual cyber man-hug...

ive only had to "put down" one dog in my life, and he "knew" what was up when i did it.  Ill never forget it either when i took off his collor.

in va beach i would walk "Yippes" with a leash hooked to his collor but id take off his collor and he would bite down on it and kinda lead himself.

i did this riding a bike with him to the side.

the doctor never got the chance to put him down, he died right then and there... died from a sinus infection / cut he got from a beaver he was very interested in.

sorry you have to go through this, i really feel for you and your family.

I have had to do that more than once at my age, and I can tell you at least for me, it never gets any easier. It's the price we pay for love. I just found a little pit bull girl about 4 months old under my neighbor's trailer next to my house four days ago. I got her and gave her food and water and reported her lost, but no one ever called or reported her missing. So, I had to take her to a shelter. She was a sweet heart. She followed me every where, slept next to my bed, she inhaled her food like she had not ate in days. I tried to give her away and nobody wanted her. I don't think I've been without a dog for about 30+ years and I wouldn't want to be. They are right there even if nobody wants else to be around you (lol). I too am sorry to hear about your friend. Please give your little boy a hug for me and tell him I said I'm sorry.

Sorry man. I know how that feels. I held my dog as he went to sleep. It was the hardest things I've ever done. It truly is the loss of your best friend. No person ever loves you the way your dog does. I have never gotten another dog because I don't want to ever do that again.

I found this some time back, and I saved it.

If it should be, that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend only,
Stay with me to the end,
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will see
It is a kindness you do to me
Although my tail it's last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Don't grieve it should be you,
Who decides this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Smile - for we walked together,
For a little while.

Rosie, RIP

I feel for you, Beau - I just had to go through the same thing with my parents' dog, Ben. He was an 11 year old golden retriever, and he had started having trouble getting up and walking. My parents tried a few medications on him, which seemed to be working really well (I even took him for a fairly long walk) but one day they came home from the store and he was paralyzed from the hips down. Dad called me at work, they wanted me there for when the vet came (she actually made a house-call!). When I got there the vet was already there and she had already loaded him up with painkillers. You have never seen a more stoned golden retriever. She then gave him the needle and he went very peacefully. I was glad it happened there in his home rather than at a vet office. The necropsy showed it was a large tumor on his spine that had ruptured, severing his spinal nerve.

I have heard a lot of people say they'd never own another dog after having to go through this, and I say it's . Yes, it is one of the saddest things you can do, having a sick pet put down, but those few days or weeks of sadness are not enough to make the ten plus years of happiness and love a dog gives you "not worth it". For this reason I just got myself a puppy...

Wife and I have been talking, we'll get another dog, but not right away. We've got a 4 or 5 year old Boxer and my 12 year old Lab/Beagle mix still.

Rosie was a great dog, always had a woof to let us know someone was here, never vicious or mean, got along with everyone in the house (the other dogs, cats, and even the 2 legged animals).

As you can see from the pic, she'd had a stroke or something, her face was a little off, but she was still an awesome ole girl. Be hard to replace her, and impossible to forget her. I'd already bought her littermate, when she came and laid down on my lap when she was a puppy. I had no choice but to take her too. Good dogs, and missed.

I'm pretty good right now, but I know later when I'm in bed, and I reach down to pet her on her mat and she won't be there anymore...that's the part that's going to tear me apart again.

May she and all other great pets now know a pain-free peace...
