Leather wrap on a Turbo Coupe steering wheel?

Just wondering but has anyone had a Turbo Coupe steering wheel leather wrapped? I've got a nice one I'd like to replace the stock base/LX/Sport wheel in my car with. I'd like to have it wrapped in leather first as, quite frankly, the lather wrapped wheel on my LX feels nicer to the touch. I'm curious as to how it would look. I would more than likely have it done in black leather. I haven't decided on regular or perforated leather though but I'm leaning towards a non-perf wrap.

I had a local upholstery shop re-wrap my factory A-frame wheel and it came out OK. Most people probably wouldn’t have noticed that it wasn’t original but it definitely wasn’t the same as a factory wrap and didn’t feel as nice to me. Eventually I ended up purchasing another NOS leather wrapped wheel.

I like the thicker Sport /TC wheel too and wish that Ford would have offered it with a leather wrap as an option. I’ve always thought about having one wrapped, but after my previous experience I haven’t pursued it. I do think that if you found someone who specializes in doing that type of work instead of just general upholstery work, that it could be done well. Of course the costs for the service at that level of craftsmanship probably wouldn’t be inexpensive, but then again, neither was that NOS wheel I purchased.

Do some research on the reps of the upholstery shops in your area. Then take it to the best one you can afford. There are some Hackjobbers out there so be careful. The shop I take my cars to here, the people have been doing upholstery work for around 30 years, and are skilled enough to far surpass any factory work, which is usually sloppy at best in comparison. I'm having mine done in Black Leather as well, perforated. Will post up pics when it's done.

I guess I'll have to bring the wheel to the upholstery shop I like and see what he says he can do. I don't want one of those "lumpy" jobs where the thread sticks up way too far from the wheel rim. Making it look factory with the really tight stitching is a pain, but if he can do that it would be worth the extra money to me. The guy is not cheap but he does good work. Every time I've been in his shop he has some nice high end cars in it. He redid the front leather seats on my Thunderbird and did a great job. Looks just as good if not better than factory if you ask me :D

Back in November I contacted Craft Customs who restores steering wheels and dashes. They wanted $200 to wrap the wheel of my '88 XR7 in leather and an additional $100 to wrap the auto shift handle. I know it's a little pricey but they appear to offer quality resto. Here's the website: http://www.craftcustoms.com/index.htm
