fuel pump wont prime

i have an 88 tc and there isnt power at the pump.Ive replaced the IRCM and the pump.Does anyone know which wire is the ground and where does it go and what it is grounded to.Any suggestions on what to check would be helpful.

The ground to energize the fuel pump relay in the IRCM is provided by the EEC.
Find the self test connector under the hood. I believe it is near the right fender apr0n in front of the shock tower.
Ground the tan/light green wire. If the pump runs, the EEC is probably bad.
There is an inertia switch that trips if the car takes a jolt. It is in the trunk. The manual says it is behind the RH wheel well.
Push the button to reset it.

as mentioned but,,

after you ground the Tan light green wire, *turn your key forward to the run position"

let us know what happens.

you can also ground the tan light green wire on the fuel pump relay in the trunk but if your not familiar with the wiring, dont do anything else but just ground the tan light green wire.  doing this is to double check if there is a broken wire somewhere.

so, if you groudn the tan /lg wire at the self test connector and no pump then do the same at the fuel pump relay and if still no fuel pump, report back.

It is on the back of the trunk valance near the tail lights on a COUPE.

PIN 22 ON THE ECM!!! Goes to the ALDL then pin 18 on the IRCM. Grounding it at any of these points will run the pump if the IRCM is OK.

Pump relay is not in the trunk JAY on a TC!!

Check for battery at the INERTIA SWITCH. Or better yet Jump IT OUT!!!  Or run the pump from the inertia switch and work back to the IRCM. Applying battery to the inertia switch should run the pump. Or ground what i posted above should run the pump. Good Luck

Not to be an ass, but if you don't know where the inertia switch is on these cars, you're probably best off to buy a bicycle lol.

With THAT said...who the hell is "jay"? lol

And, the inertia switch is behind the carpeted trunk trim panel, near the bulb area of the tail light assembly on ALL the sefi Tbird/Cougars, not strictly a TC, or a 5.0 etc.

Found out what it was the clips on the connector going to the inertia switch were broke and it wasnt getting a good connection so i just bypassed it its now back on the road

Good glad you are up and running. Those switches are more trouble than ford expected i guess. They also get intermittent. I hate them and if you desire you can replace that with one from a RANGE ROVER -  Land Rover. They come with the plug if ordered correctly.  They are much more reliable.  Glad you found it.

Below is a universal one that works excellent.
I use them on pump UP GRADES. These are the best i have found in my opinion.

FOE the ECM has a time out feature. Some cars dont use them any more. GM does not use them. A lot of cars do but it seems like the FORD units (older ones) are to sensitive. I replaced mine with the one i posted. Reason is when i would power shift in to second it would trip. No fooling it did. I tried to move it with no luck. The ford ones SUCK. They also have a slight corrosion issue. Not to much on the TC but on mustangs they really get finicky.

The later ones ARE better.  I haven't seen one replaced in our shop in years.  Even then, it was an 80's car. A Tempo I think.  Even if you let the PCM time out, you're still talking about 1/2 to a full gallon of fuel.  I'd prefer less than that if I washiznit and my fuel lines were breached.  I'm glad you still run one, even if you had to get it elsewhere.

I agree the new Police cars have them and they work very good. I guess Ford redesigned them at some point. Thanks!!
