Graphic Equalizer November 29, 2012, 07:27:02 PM I have the original graphic equalizer in my 88 Cougar. It works but you have to hold in the power button and it won't stay in. I guess the button needs replaced.I'd really like to stay original if I can. Repair shops are very few in my area. I called the only one I could find and was told that they couldn't get the button. Does anyone know of a source to find a part like this? Thanks: Charlie Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #1 – November 29, 2012, 07:42:12 PM I think if you open the case you can fix the tab somehow to make it work. The other option is to open it up and glue the power button in the "on" position so it works.BTW you can use the graphic EQ and factory amp with an aftermarket head unit :D. Graphic Equalizer Reply #2 – November 29, 2012, 08:06:36 PM That looks like a nice setup. In a way I'd like to have an updated stereo but I really like the equalizer. For now I'm going to try to stay original with both. Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #3 – November 29, 2012, 10:26:22 PM Or just take a small piece of paper, fold it up, push the button in, and wedge the paper in the crack between the button and the bezel . How many times I've done that in a pinch! Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #4 – November 30, 2012, 09:47:32 AM My factory equalizer does this too. I also just wedged something to hold the button in. I don't remember just what I did because it was about 10 years ago, but nothing is visible from the front. It just looks like the button is clicked on. Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #5 – November 30, 2012, 10:29:26 AM Guys, why do you recommend him such dumb ideas like glueing the button? I think the best way is to open the equalizer unit and make a solder joint across the power switch terminals. Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #6 – November 30, 2012, 11:07:21 AM My preference would be to find the button, I just don't know if that's possible. I found what might be a couple of more options by googleing the surrounding area. I'll make some calls today to see if it can be fixed. I think the button is NOS and ford proprietary. Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #7 – November 30, 2012, 12:01:52 PM Quote from: Pacerized;403611I think the button is NOS and ford proprietary.I am sure that it is, but this is one of those situations where even a non-functional equalizer would come in handy. Another possibility would be to de-solder the switch, take it apart and repair the switch mechanism. Since the switch is mechanical, this is a possible, though obviously a less desirable option. Graphic Equalizer Reply #8 – November 30, 2012, 07:13:29 PM turbocoupe50 fixed one of his a long while back when he was in there. Usually we just use a chunk of plastic of a plastic fork and wedge it in there though. Quote Selected
Graphic Equalizer Reply #9 – November 30, 2012, 08:37:46 PM I found a guy that had some NOS buttons listed on E-bay earlier in the year but he was out. I have the cougar in a body shop having my rear spoiler painted and installed right now. It may be a couple of weeks before I get to it but I think I'll try to take out the equalizer and fix the switch. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to try leaving it on all the time by jamming something in it or making a permanent jump. Quote Selected

The factory amp and premium sound speakers still sound pretty good, actually better than the factory system in either the Mark VII, Focus, or Mustang. Quote Selected
