T-5 swap... check!

Well, thanks to my friend Steve (CougarKing) and a night without sleep (well, an hour cuz I was falling asleep standing up...  :o ) I now have a 5 speed in my bird  :D A few minor details left to go, but it's perfectly drivable!

Looking good!

Wish I could drive a manual but I haven't figured a way to put the shifter and the clutch on my handcontrols :(

Thundergrowl... pull that off and you're the man! If you can pull off with 2 hands what it takes the rest of us both hands and feet, you rock!

Shifter's a stock stang shifter which for most of yesterday had a rag shift  cuz the threads just hurt. Looking to get this http://go.mrgasket.com/ProductDetails.aspx?brandId=0&productID=259641&majID=800&minID=8006&selection=23&minselection=4 and a custom shift  from http://www.kools.com/ Swirl paint matched to body color with the T-Bird Script emblem :D

And yeah, plenty of room for the tiny little t-5... especially after removing the bohemoth of an aod (I love that aod, I beat the  out of it with no bad side effects, it's going in my garage for safe keeping)

Thundergrowl: I can't see why you couldn't have hand controls for a standard - motorcycles do it, so I'm sure with a little innovation it could be done in a car.

The only thing with a motorcycle is that it swaps the hands for the feet - you clutch with your hand and shift with your foot. To do the same thing in a car you'd need four hands (one for gas/brake, one for clutch, one for shift, and of course you'd still have to have something to steer the car with.) This could likely be partly overcome by mounting the clutch lever on the shifter shaft and using a hydraulic clutch setup, so that when you grab the shifter you release the clutch by squeezing the lever. That would still have you needing three hands though...

Now, if you could come up with some way to use motorcycle handlebars you'd be set. You could have the gas/brake on the left handlebar (opposite a bike, I know, but we're talking custom) so that as you reached for the shifter with your right hand you could still brake, steer and throttle with your left. The problem with this idea, of course, is that motorcycle handlebars on a car steering rack would provide very little steering action (unless the rack was along the lines of 1:1).

ive seen it done. i raced a kid that had no legs. he had a newer acura with some sort of custom setup. he beat me off the line too...one lever opperated opperated the clutch and gas by mixing push and pull motion with left to right. the other the brakes. dont ask me how he steered too...

crystal...makes the SO almost tolerable ;)

now that are cars are so similar we should race...if i remember correctly you have gears. id like to see how much you actually pull on me ;)

Modified F1 paddle shifters, bi-directional. Pull toward you to shift up or down, push away to engage the clutch. Paddles would work in opposite of each other when you shifted through the gears.

Nope, not yet anyway ;)

And ask anyone who's driven my car... it's not your typical SO motor...

I think I'll start a thread to solicit ideas for handcontrols and a manual.

I dunno, ask the guy that rebuilt it, he sure wouldn't tell me anything (done bfore I bought the car). There are a few people on here who've driven it and they just say it's not your typical SO. COuld just be the low mileage... Who knows, who cares, it's fun :)

Tom, it could have been done in time, but as it was, I got the car back in to 1 piece the friday before and had the brakes and exhaust done during the week. I drove it like 3 days before I left, so I decided to wait just to be onn the safe side ;)

And if you guys couldn't tell by the lack of interior pics, that's not fully settled yet ;)

Thundergrowl, have you ever considered a newer automatic electronically-controlled tranny?  What is it, the 4R70W?  I've heard a lot of them can be adapted to use paddle-shifting.  Sure, it's not a stick shift but you can still shift the gears

Crystal - excellent job, congrats to you and steve both. I'm sure Steve is glad he wasn't doing it in a parking lot  :D

LOL, no kidding there! We did the swap at his house since he has air tools and plenty of extra random parts :D
