loss in top speed

hey guys i posted this in AF but got no response so im posting it here in hopes someone will know something helpful because i can't figure out whats wrong.

couple questions about my 86 3.8L...

First off, my car has lost quite a bit of its top speed. Now, i know its not a fast (or even close to fast) car to begin with and the speedometer only goes up to 85, but a few months back i used to be able to go well over 85 and now i top out at 77. Speedo doesnt seem wrong either. So any help with that is appreciated.

Second, when i travel on the highway for too long, i start to get steam (or some kind of light smoke) coming out of my vents. I turn vent on to blow it all out of the system but leave it off for 5 minutes and its there again. My heater core has a leak and leaks out of the A/C weep hole. Could this have anything to do with it?

Thanks for the help guys and please respond if you know anything that it could be cause im about lost. thanks again.

The second problem is definately your heater core. Not easy to replace... but not the worst to replace. You can bypass it for now since summer is coming.

This should only be a brief hijack, but..

Mine "steams" only when I use Normal A/C, doesn't do it on Max A/C, and I don't recall seeing it happen on any heat settings. It only drips out the weep hole during and for awhile after A/C operation, as it should. (unless it's one of those 1-drip-every-ten-minutes slow leaks) There's no smell of chemicals/coolant/whatever when it does it. Is that still a small leak, or is it just from the excessive humidity lately?

Can't really help ya on the first problem.. but I have a hunch that people are going to want more information from ya.

Eh, now that I think about it, my 3.8 CFI starting doing the same thing before I got rid of it. The guy that bought it said it had worn bearings (read ready to spin, lol) and a flat camshaft.

The normal setting is trying to cool the outside(humid)air, hence the steam... So in reality the normal setting is working the system a lot harder than max, which recirculates the cooled air inside the cabin. As far as I'm concerned none of my cars even have a normal setting, I use max only..

I tend to use only Max A/C, but my fiance keeps switching it back to Normal. Guess it's time to have a little chat about that. :D
