a new life for an 88 turbo coupe March 26, 2012, 08:50:07 PM Hi all, i just joined this great forum. i have wanted one of these TC's since high school and they were brand new, well it only took 25 years and i finally found a good comprimise of decent shape and affordability. I actually bought this 88/auto TC from a junkyard, the owner has a pile of these cars and almost never sells any parts or cars. He finally relented when he saw i was serious about maintaining it and fixing it up. it runs well, although a bit slow, maybe a wastegate issue he said as i left, only makes about 4lbs of boost. has some small surface rust in places, but bottom side of the car is spotless.this is a pic when i first got it home. its all stock except for a bent up K&N filter. i want to find an original air cleaner setup. I have a few air boxes if you're interested.i may take you up on that. are those factory oval air filters still available? or is there a K&n version? the dingbat who put this one on just has the VAM flopping around on the fenderwell. I do have some more pictures, i just have to get them loaded. Quote Selected
a new life for an 88 turbo coupe Reply #5 – March 26, 2012, 11:34:36 PM both a stock replacement and a K&N should still be available. I'm pretty sure I still have the brackets as well. also if you find that you have a bad wastegate actuator I have one of those too. BTW the A4LD in those cars are weak... you might plan the funeral now and gather some 5 speed swap parts Quote Selected

a new life for an 88 turbo coupe Reply #9 – March 27, 2012, 08:13:16 PM That's nice!!! Looks like the 1st one I owned back in '96, 'cept it was a 5speed...Generally if the wastegate is inoperative you'd be in overboost... Check it's actuator rod to see if the gate is partially open not allowing boost to build... Also you can try disconnecting the BCS(boost control solenoid) by jumping the two ports on the turbo together with a short piece of hose, a automatic generally boost's 10-12psi with this mod...
