Summer Vacations... suggestions?

Every summer, my girlfriend Ashlie and I go on a short vacation for about a week. This past year we went to Myrtle Beach, and I'm seriously considering actually going there again this year, but I'd still like to try and go somewhere different.  I'd really really like to go somewhere near the ocean where I'll be able to get a oceanfront hotel.  The last time we went to Myrtle Beach, we stayed a few miles away from the beach and it was a pain, having to drive and then pay for parking every time we wanted to go to the beach.  Plus, what's cooler than being able to see the ocean out your window?

I'm wondering if anyone else has additional suggestions.  I wouldn't at all mind going to Myrtle Beach again, but I've also been kicking around the idea of going all the way to Florida, though it would add on a few extra days (both ways) of driving.  Not sure about going to Miami: even MORE driving, and too much of a big city... I just got back from a weekend in "Pissburgh", you can keep your big cities.  I know there are tons of beaches along the Florida coast, but I'm not sure they're worth driving that far.  Clear water and white sand may sway my opinion, though. (That's only on the Gulf side of Florida, right?)

Anyway... I'm just on a tangent here... someone give me some guidance.

Don't take this personal but setting on a beach watching girls that I can't have walking by in g-strings is not my idea of a relaxing vacation.

I'd rather go somewhere where there are things to expericence, sights to be seen, enjoy the company of good people, and memories to take back home.

I'd rather go somewhere like Baxo's suggestion where there are new things to experience. Life's too short to sit on a beach.

When you get back home from your vacation you can say "we sat on a beach" or you can say you did some new things that you never did before, saw things that were out of this world, met people who were very entertaining/interesting.

Just my opinion.

You could visit Newfoundland

Wildwood NJ is a cool place, but there really isnt much to do, other than the beach, boardwalk, etc
It's Gumby's fault.

There are some awesome beaches in North Carolina, Brian.  The outer banks are cool.  This site has some good info too:  http://www.nccoast.com/

You could come down here and experience a hurricane or two.. :p

If you come to this side of the state, we can arrange for someone to steal your wallet.. and it'll be JUST like visiting Miami.. but without all the traffic and drag-queens.

Just remember: If you drop your wallet in South Beach, kick it back to Miami. :p (and no, I've never dropped my wallet there!) :p

Miami blows.  That's where my wife used to live before she saw the light and moved up here.  :-)

Jim, I can't believe how many nice places there are in NC, some of 'em are actually affordable too.  The only thing I worry about is some of them being so secluded that there's nothing to do, but I'm sure that's not the case.

Ocean City MD.

100something blocks long, 4 blocks wide, guarenteed to get an ocean view. One side on the ocean, one on the bay. Great time, great location. My friends and I rented a 3 story row house on 63rd st. that had a deck that stepped right up to the sand dune and onto the beach. The 2nd story deck had an amazing view. The entire city is a seasonal one geared only to tourists. Mini golf, paintball, boardwalk, restraunts, etc and all at decent prices.

In order to reserve a house like that you must get it in Jan, otherwise there are many nice hotels there.

Come to Iowa and get a field-view room.  And there's lots to do!  Like...  hmm...  Cow tipping  :rollin: .  And the land is so flat you can watch sunrises and sunsets!  Nevermind, Iowa sucks...

amooset, I drove across the ENTIRE state of Iowa on a family vacation to South Dakota.  No thank you, sir.

Mike - My mother and younger brother are going to Ocean City in June.  I'll see what they say about it and I'll start looking into it, too.

Right now I'm also looking at a place, suggested to me on another board.  Gulf Ss, AL.  Who woulda thunk it, white sand beaches in Alabama?  Looking at it, though, it looks like it's too pricey as well.
