Noise in the rear end of dad's '86

Hello, everyone:
The '86 I was buying from my dad has a whine in the rear end. :disappoin
It's a stock 3.8 V-6, 3 speed auto car with 64,000 miles.
Bad news is, the garage he took it to (They've worked on his cars for decades) said the worst case scenario on the rear was about $600.00 to redo the entire rear end. Dad has already replaced the motor mounts to the tune of $350.00, and is willing to eat that amount for the sale price of $1000.00, but not the rear end work.
Dad says it had been whining for a while, but he never took it on a 900 mile trip like I have to do to get it home to GA. I have a shot at an '88 with a rebuilt motor for $200.00, but it needs the nose cone replaced. I'm going to grok it tomorrow. Anyone give me an idea whether this '86 of Dad's is gonna strand me or end up costing me large green, or am I further ahead to buy the '88? I'm in a spot, Dad's offering me the chance to back out of the deal. Someone give me some input? :confused:  Please e-mail me at: lochsloy@tds.com with any help with this in the way of information.

id love to replace motor mounts for 350 bux :bs:

get a bone yard rear for a lot cheaper.  get the whole thing so its just a bolt on.

i dont get it,, one day i might post a topic about my rear going out but gezzz,, with that low of miles,, are you sure its the rear or is it the shop tell you this. Id say for 350 bux on motor mounts then its probably the shop tossing out the bait.

Ask if he can check to see if the rear end cover is bent on the bottom.

meaning,,,,,,,  if a mechanic jacked up the rear of the car, they usually put a floor jack right under the pumpkin.  the cover is real easy to flair and bend if jacked up on the rear edge of the pumpkin.  The odds of bending the cover are very high due to the the way its designed.  If they took time to look,, they should slide the jack just a wee bit more forward and there would be a flat surface on the bottom of the pumpkin.

WOW my rearend would be whinin too if I payed $350 for motor mounts, thats quite a screwin'....

not to mention his dad is like 77 and isnt able to do the work himself.  thats an insulting screwing!!!

if the gears are whining, thats generally a sign of wear, or improper installation

the rear in my car has been whining for years
It's Gumby's fault.

Well Guys:
Dad is taking the car to a garage he can trust( They know they'd have to deal with me, and I'd be one pissed off Gawgia version of my late grand dad, especially if I fly all the way up there!) My Grandpa was one savvy mechanic in his own right! I think I'm in the ballpark, somewhere, maybe in the cheap seats. Anyway, my wife has relented, I'll still get the 'Bird (literally) and I sell her hearse and her bike. the upshot is, she bought ANOTHER hearse from a friend to help out his medical bills. It's a '73 with 49,000 miles and very little rust. Mine cost one grand, hers cost two grand, go figure!
She will let me get new rims for the 'Bird. I'm looking for either ten hole or turbo coupe wheels to fit, and possibly some info on converting the front spindle/rotors to five lug.
The Cat site shows what axles and drums will do the rear, but not the front! Bummer!!
Well that's the story until now, I'll update the story as it develops, and send pics of the '86 when I get them. I'll take some when I get to PA, sort of the "before" pics.
