Pcv valve ?

hey guys i have a 87 xr7 with the Ho coversion, E303 cam. i what fooling with the intake manifold and i pulled the thing out that sits in the back of the lower manifold. i when to a car store and got a new pcv valve put it is to small.http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=FRA&mfrpartnumber=FV198&parttype=5&ptset=A

Yes, you need both of those.

The grommet fits snug in the lower intake and the valve goes into it.

Note the PCV valve is a universal fit. For that engine you cut the segment with the two horizontal tubes in the picture off so you are left with just the base tube sticking out.

Cut off? You might just be able to pull that F-shaped plug off. Yeah, I had to do that when I replaced the PCV on the '88. (pull off the F-shaped part, that is)

Also replaced that filter underneath the grommet as well.. you might want to do that while you're messing around back there.. but if you manage to get it out without mangling it too much, you could probably just clean it in paint thinner or something. If not, it's a $5-6 part at Advanced. A long (like 3") wood or drywall screw works wonders.

So here's a dumb one. Does anyone have a decent picture of exactly where that metal filter piece is? I've continually heard about it and the general where-abouts of it's location, but an actual pic may come in handy for future reference.

If you can, do a somewhat close one and a pulled back one. That would help with knowing the placement in relationship to other identifiable parts in the engine bay. TIA

It may be more helpful to see it's location with a manifold on the car but here it is from one of the manifolds I have laying around.

The filter is way down in there so it may be best to use narrow needle nose pliars to get it out. Sorry, the filter is not in this manifold so I had to draw it in.

Tangent time!

Does that little square-headed plug in the lower left corner lead to a water passage? Can it be used for a sender, if so?

I think so. I don't see why it can't be used for a sender but good luck getting that little square-headed plug out. They seem pretty much welded in place. I was going to use them to plug my new manifold so I wouldn't have to buy plugs but couldn't break them free.

This is the best I could do today. I only remembered it about 5 minutes before I had to leave the house for a couple hours. By the time I got back, it was threatening to rain and it was pretty dark from the clouds.. so not much chance there.

My upper intake is off, my injectors are removed, and the fuel rail is just laying on top of the lower intake.. so that's why the pic might look a little odd.

This probably isn't very useful, with the manifold pictures already posted.. but I said I'd post a pic so here ya go. If you still need clarification tomorrow I can see about a better pic.

Pretty much exactly what I was looking for. The 3 pics are a big help in making locating that infernal part a quick task. I already ordered the part from the dealer so hopefully I can get it in over the weekend. Oh, something tells me this is greatest hits/sticky material

take your little propane torch to it get it nice and hot and put a wrench on it... it will turn..

Figured i'd get a pic up of a comparison of what a bad and good "crankcase breather filter looks like". Also got the box with motorcraft part # on it in the pic as well. The guy at the dealship ordered the right part name the last time, just got the wrong #.

And while i'm at it i'd figure i'd throw and epiphany i've into the mix. Looking at one of the pics bird351 posted (and I borrowed for visual reference sake). Does the pcv valve actually sit in the gromet for the breather filter? From this pic it sure does look like it. If that's the case, what problems could this potentially cause? I know the clogged crankcase filter can blow lower intakes gaskets, but not sure about what not having things connected up right would do?
