win98 help

OK scored some comp stuff for free from gf's parents including an old Pentium 1 (144mhz?) whopping 1.5gb HD, something like 80mb ram :giggle: and windows 98 (upgraded from win95!)

it worked somewhat but wouldnt go to some sites because the version of internet exploder was too old so I went and updated it, now it doesnt work  :dunno: It will boot up and do its 'stuff' then it says that "internet explorer has performed an illegal action and has been terminated" or something to that tune. All that is displayed is the desktop picture and the mouse pointer, I can start up task manager but it doesnt appear that I can start a new process from there (like winXP which I am familiar with) I have a copy of win98 on disk but cant seem to initialize installation of it either.

Any ideas? I can probabally score an old 10gb hd and some extra memory from some 'parts computers' a friend has to get it working a bit better. I was thinking if I could get it working decently i'd give it to my mom so she can play on the internet since shes been internet-less since I moved out a year ago. Shes slow and old so I figure they'd be the perfect pair  :D

If all ese fails i'm tossing the cd drive in to my comp and trashing the rest in a fit of office space-like mayhem

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Well the HP POS died so it looks like i'm stuck using the old 98 for a while. I lost almost 7gb of music so I may just snap and kill the other comp... and its +30C INSIDE my house with the windows and doors open! WTF! I gotta go destroy something *eyes up the HP* gotta go

BTW is any version of windows/msn messenger able to run on something this old?

Get gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ , it does all of them and it's free.

I would max out the RAM, get a bigger hard drive, and totally wipe it clean and start over with Win2000 Pro if you've got it.  It should run 2000 with minimal problems, although a little slow.  But it would be more up-to-date than '98 and any newer version of Messenger or other software like that should run okay on it.  Make sure you pop open the case and identify all of the component model numbers and manufacturers so you can search for drivers if you need to.

Well I ran the free version of killdisk accross it a few times before formatting it and its doing okay so far. I tossed the hd in to my xp machine and it would only get so far befoe displaying an error message then restarting  so now its back in to the old comp. I somehow got msn 7.0 working on here which is suprising since it doesnt meet the minimum requirements but i'm not going to argue :p But I gotta work then go enjoy the sun, maybe i'll play around with it some more tonight.

pssh I am runing a copmuter that dosent meet the requirements of the operating system. They are more guidelines. I had a 486 at 33mhz running windows 200 pro and it was fine. It will run, its just a matter of how long it will take. Ram can sometimes matter, but not a whole lot as long as you page virtual memory.

Well its 4:52am and I finally got the 1.5GB hd and win98 working on the hp, the Pentium1 was so  slow I was going insane(er)! but now its okay one problem is everything is huge and I cant make it smaller. I done the right click desktop, properties, Settings but it wont let me make it any smaller which sucks, any suggestions? (a new comp is out of the question at the moment) and after all this I find out that my digital camera needs win98 SE or better to run and of course i'm running FE... i'll update it later, i've got the whole day off. Right now I need sleep
