Today I went to my father's to get my truck back from him so I could buy a new patio set. While there he showed me a flyer he'd gotten from the local Hyundai dealership. Seems they were offering a new Sonata with $3k off and 0% interest. I'd just the other day wrecked my Jetta TDI and needed a new efficient daily driver, so I went to check it out.

Long story short, I ended up buying my very first brand new car. 2011 Sonata, 2.4 liter direct injection engine, 6-speed manual tranny, and rated at 50 miles per imperial gallon (the diesel VW I'd just wrecked was rated the same 50 MPIG when new). With the 0% interest the payments are only $320/month all taxes in for 84 months (normally I'd never dream of borrowing money for that long, but at 0% it's free money so why not?). I'd considered trading the 300 in, but that only would've taken $80/month off the payments, and since I couldn't buy another 300 for that much I decided to keep it.

No pics yet, as I haven't even seen it myself - they only had a white one and a grey one with the manual tranny, and I didn't want either colour, so I bought a blue one that will be there early this coming week.

Funny thing about this deal. I'd originally thought about an Elantra, since it was cheaper than the Sonata by $4k. I drove one and was set on buying it, until the salesman told me that it didn't qualify for the 0% and had no "money on the hood". Every car on their lot, from the Accent to the Genesis, qualified, EXCEPT the Elantra! It carried an interest rate of 3.99%. So I told him to run the numbers on the Sonata and even though it had a higher sticker, it had a lower actual price because of the $3k discount and 0%. In fact I was able to add "gap" coverage (where if I wreck it they'll pay out my loan if it's more than the car's value) and loan insurance (for illness and/or job loss) and still didn't bring the monthly payment up to what the Elantra would've been...

Anyway, I know most of you have no interest in hearing about a Hyundai, but since it's my first new car I just had to share

Beautiful car. I was just checking out their website and mpg figures were 24/35/28, city/hwy/combined. No matter. Enjoy that new car smell!

That 24/35/28 is in US gallons as rated by the US EPA. Tha imperial gallon, which Canadian cars are rated in by Transport Canada, is about 20% larger (US gallon = 3.8 liters, imperial gallon = 4.5). Bigger gallons = more miles per.

Oh, and another bonus is a gas card included with the car that gives me 30 cents per liter off gas for 1000 liters. Gas is $1.35/liter right now (that's $5.13 per US gallon, or $6.07 per impperial gallon) and will likely touch or even exceed the record highs of 2008 ($1.49/liter) so that'll come in handy...

Learn something new everyday. By the way, why didn't you go with the 2.0T? Too much temptation to mod the car under warranty? >: )

No, more like not available as a standard and costs almost $10k more than the base model...

I'm a die hard ford fan (except for my vws) and I have to admit, those are nice cars. Had one as a rental once. It was by far the best rental I have had.

Excuse me? The Sonata is built in Montgomery, Alabama, USA (and as an added bonus, by non-uaw labour!). Would you rather I bought a made-in-Mexico Ford? Or a Canadian-built Honda? And spare me that "profits go overseas" bullshiznit as well - I'm Canadian, so all of 'em are foreign makes to me.

Not that I have to justify where I spend my money, but...

Had Ford offered anything that I like (besides the Mustang, which was not the type of car I was looking for) and at anywhere near the deal I got I'd surely have considered one. I don't much care for the Fusion, which looks about 10 years old. Taurus is well out of my price range. 2011 Focus is nice enough but overpriced. Fiesta is a great small car but I didn't want a small car.

Same goes for Chrysler and GM. Without going through 'em model by model, I simply don't like the Impala, Malibu, and Avenger and 200 (and I've already got a 300 anyway). The new Regal is out of my price range. Toyota and Honda both act like they're doing you a favour by selling you a car (and price them accordingly).

And say what you will, that 5 year, 100000 km comprehensive warranty (as opposed to the Big 3's 3/60) is a big draw.

Oh, and how many manufacturing jobs are you creating by driving a 24 year old Cougar, anyway? Not that there's anything wrong with a 24 year old Cougar, mind you, but if you're gonna get on a soap box at least have a leg to stand on. At least my "furrin" Sonata purchase contributed to American jobs at the Alabama factory, Canadian and American jobs in the transport business, and Canadian (and local) jobs at the dealership...

profits may go overseas, but there are american workers building them, so they're making jobs here. People should really think about what they say.

P.S. I'd love to have the new blacked out AWD Fusion.

Funny, I typed something similar but decided I shouldn't instigate on other peoples threads. This is about the same way I ended up daily drivng a 5spd 1.8T Jetta.

I agree. I almost took the plunge on a 2010 Left over Camaro, but the 2010 used Genesis was offered to be finally with a 10 year, 100kmile comprehensive warranty. Nothing that Ford, GM, or Chrysler could even touch. The Camaro and Mustang are probably faster, well definitely faster, but hell. I can drive my Hyundai Genesis 3.8l track pack Coupe for tens years, worry free.

Congrats! It's nice to have good credit and get 0%. I was going to buy a used car but 0% financing on a brand new Focus got me cheaper payments. The best deal I could find on a used car loan was 2.3%.It's nice to have a brand new car. I like my new Focus but I have one problem with it: it doesn't break. I'm used to tinkering with my DDs and since this is new and reliable all I do is put gas in it and drive. The T-bird doesn't break either so I need to buy something that needs fixing

Well, I've still got the 300 and Sonoma, so there will be no shortage of breakage. Plus I WILL have my four-eye Bird, 87/88 Cat or 88-92 Mark VII...

A minor change: A blue one with the 6-speed was unavailable on this half of the country, and I didn't want to wait for one, so I chose a red one instead. Pics of the new hot rod:
