AC clutch on/off Overide switch

Occasionally my a/c compressor will shut off and I have to turn the A/C off and then back on to get the A/C clutch to reactivate.

Is there a way to overide this problem and make it so the A/C doesnt cut off until I turn it off manually?

Is there something I need to replace that will fix this problem without having to bypass or overide?

Sounds like either the pressure switch on top of the drier/accumulator or the WOT relay to me. My bet would be the pressure switch is hanging up.

Test it next time it quits by checking for power on both sides of the pressure switch. If power is interrupted there, that's it. If you have power on both sides, the relay may be bad.  Do you have electronic climate control?

Have you tested system pressures?

System was tested by AC shop. I do have electric climate control. On another biard they told me to check the WOT relay. Do you know where that is located?

Is this something I can purchase at any parts store? If so, what do I ask for?

you dont want to override the switch to "keep the compressor" on.

The shop should have also said if the clutch or clutch switch was worn as well.  You say its cutting off,
well mine constantly cuts on and off as it would normally do.
Running constantly tells me that its probably charged too low.

You should trouble shoot by running the AC then,, drive the car but dont step on the gas hard.
Just ease out into traffic.
Next pull over and verify the clutch is still working.
Next pull out into traffic and gun the gas pedal a couple of times.
the wot relay will cut off the ac so you should then pull over and verify the clutch is not on.
Now flick the wot relay with your finger or tap on it and see if you can engage the relay that way.
If it does and the clutch comes back on then replace the relay.  its just a simple relay you could fine anywere imho.

Personally, i unhook the clutch during the winter and the pres switch so it doesnt run.  For some reason the compressor kicks on and off even though Im running heat which is nonsense to me.  I think it robs power so I dont want it doing so in the winter.  In the summer, I hook it back up but it doesnt cut off never to return again.

This is done to help dry the air so that the defroster can clear the windows faster. I know it sounds stupid but the reason that the glass fogs is due to the high moisture content in the air.

True. It also helps keep the seals lubricated in the compressor to keep the freon from escaping.

I was told by other 86 Turbocoupe owners that this is a common problem after you do the LA3 swap. Supposedly the PC1 has a WOT built in while the LA3 is controlled via the IRCM which my 86 TC doesnt have. They told me they just turn it on and off once it shuts off. That sounds like a PITA to me.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket source for A/C switch unit

Well, if that's the case it sounds like you no longer have a working WOT signal.

I'd just pull the plug off the relay and put in a jumper wire. All the relay does is interrupt the power to the clutch. If you wanted to have a working WOT switch you could put a Hobbs switch in to send the relay the missing signal from the ECU.

I don't know what PC1 and LA3 are, but here is what I see looking at the 86 and 87 EVTM's:
Only the 3.8 and 5.0 cars have WOT A/C cutout relays.
The 86 and 87 2.3 have a solid state equivelent of a cutout relay.
On the 86 it is part of the cooling fan controller.
On the 87 it is part of the IRCM.

In all cases the EEC signals WOT by putting ground on EEC pin 54.
