Seriously. I couldn't even believe that popped up. Makes you wonder what else is lurking out there....

One without cruise would probably be even harder to find, wouldn't it?

Yeah, the non-cruise wheel is kind of not common. When these cars were new it was very popular to get a Preferred Equipment Package (PEP) that bundled most of the popular items together: power windows, tilt, power locks, power seat, a/c, etc. and cruise control was usually in there. It was still a standalone option but I've always felt that 60-70% of these cars had a PEP anyhow. Personally I think the steering wheels look rather funny without the buttons on them...it's like a hot dog without ketchup. You can't have a hot dog without ketchup, it's just not right. ;)

Now the leather wrap was sometimes tricky too; if you had a floor shifter then that came with leather wrap, so the steering wheel had to match it. But if it was a Turbo Coupe or XR7 with the sport wheel, that couldn't be wrapped. There's always a 'gotcha' in there somewhere.

So to be clear, in most model years, on a non-sport wheel, you could have:
- Steering wheel, no leather, no cruise
- Steering wheel, leather, cruise

Sometimes you could have:
- Steering wheel, no cruise, leather
- Steering wheel, cruise, no leather

Throw in the 1983 and 1984 color-keyed steering wheels. And the 1985-86 brown dash panel cars, alongside the "normal" charcoal panels.

And now you see why it's difficult to get a NOS wheel for your year, your color, your style. ;)

By the way, that exact steering wheel in the auction was used in the last of the RWD Mercury Capris and before the 1987-88 Cougar. I want to say 1985-86 (definitely 1986). I'm surprised that more people restoring Capris aren't jumping on them from our cars.

I guess $300 isn't bad if it's what you really need to make your car perfect. I've got a non-leather wheel w/ cruise from a mid-80s Capri that is mint and a leather wrapped wheel from Vinnie that is just as nice. If I paid $300 for a wheel, I wouldn't want to put my grubby mitts on it. I can see paying more than that for older car's wheels. I guess our parts are going to keep going up in price as time goes on. Unless all of us decide we don't want our cars anymore. Yeah.... That ain't happening!!

THEN AGAIN....if it were a perfect wheel, it really wouldn't go with the rest of my interior. The interior is near-perfect yes, but still, 140,000 mile car with a perfect steering wheel? Come onnnnnnn no way that's the original wheel.  No one would be fooled. This one will at least seem legit, but better than the mooshy gooey mess that is the upper portion of the wheel there now. Also, I wouldn't wanna take that wrap off an NOS part. I mean COME ON!!!!! NOS!!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

And the insanity within me continues.

I didn't try to buy it because I wouldn't be able to use it without worrying I'd ruin it.

I must be the only one here who has a 23 year old leather wrapped wheel that doesn't leak goo.......

Apparently they do. Everyone always complains about it. Mine doesn't do it.

Sold one that had the Cat's head logo (was from a Capri) for $30 a couple of years ago.....Not NOS, but MINT nonetheless.

I will find a way to get the Cat head in there somehow.  It is the 87-88 Mustang GT wheel.

I should post a pic of mine. The bottom 2/3 of it is good, the very bottom part being the best, like new. The top area is heavily sun-baked and in the heat pretty much turns to goo. :hick: Grabbing it feels like grabbing a fudge brownie and you can knead it around, its definitely beat badly. Probably just a glue or something inside that holds the leather to the wheel core.

That is exactly how mine was..... before I threw it in the basp00get.

My Sport wheel leaks goo when it gets hot out. I have a wheel cover on it for now:hick:, until I can put the TC wheel on.:D

Are the non-leather with cruise ones pretty common?  I have one in very good condition from a 1987 Turbo coupe, black.

I replaced it with a Mustang wheel from a cop car that did not have Cruise.  Also it a bit smaller around, but still not leather.
