Failed Emissions!!

Okay so my car was due for it's test and here are the results.
Hydrocarbons
state limit  1.4 GPM
my results  5.2 GPM  FAIL

Carbon Monoxide
state limit 30 GPM
my results 15.2 GPM  PASS

Oxides of Nitrogen
state limit 2.5 GPM
my results 4.6 GPM  FAIL

Tampering Inspection
Fuel Cap: Pass
Catalytic Converter: N/A

They looked under the car with a mirror to check the exhaust system but it didn't matter that I don't have catalytic converters because they weren't part of the emissions test requirements. So now I have until September 14th to spend $450 on emissions related stuff so I can get a waiver. Yay.

you got any buddies that work at advance auto, or somewhere similar?
It's Gumby's fault.

...i was gonna say...

have them ring up a bunch of shiznit, print 2 reciepts, give you one, then void the other, so youd have one to take the the emmissions station
It's Gumby's fault.

I actually thought about doing that but with a mechanic I know. He's got his own shop and I thought about having him print me up some labor reciepts. For example back in January I bought a new set of fuel injectors. I installed them myself but I was thinking of asking him to print me up a receipt for the labor to do the job. The labor plus the cost of the injectors would have me half way there already. I don't think he would because if he was audited, something would probably show up that the work was forged.

does he have reciepts that he could hand write?

Not sure. I'll have to get ahold of him to find out.

I failed with VERY similar results. I had to replac the Catalytic converter to clear the problem. I tried several other things, from EGR valve and sensor, o2 sensors, liquid cleaner, etc. If you have to pay fior 450$ of 'stuff' to get teh waiver, I spent 160$ and had cat converter replaced and aaalll readings were WAY below requirements. Can you retest, or do you have to have the waiver? If you can retest, replace the converter. You can take it off later...

I see. I'll probably get two cats cut into my h-pipe. That should cover the necessary cost. The deal is that if you do emissions related work like the cat converter, and the car fails the test again, you can get the waiver if and only if you spend the minimum of $450 to fix the problem. So if I spend say well your example $160 to put in cats and the car fails, I will not be able to get a waiver and that $160 that I just spent would not count towards the necessary $450. Atleast that's how I understand it from the pamphlet.

Man, i'm dreading the day when MD will send me the emissions ticket. I have a huge exhaust leak i'm putting off fixing in case it'll help pass  :D

Anyways, a while back I had two cats put into my T-bird. In retrospect, that might have been a dumb move since buying a whole new H-pipe and installing it would have been about the same price.

Andrew...i keep telling you...they can give 2 shiznits about your exhaust, as long as it exits out the rear, and it passes the test

my 3.8L bird had some nasty exhaust leaks, and it passed nicely, audiable leaks too

Actually I think it depends on where you go. I've had my car at two different MD inspection places. The one in Bel Air did not even look at the underside of the car. They almost didn't realize that it had dual exhaust. Today, I went to the one in Cecil and they ran the mirror under the car up and down the front, back and sides twice looking for leaks and whatnot.

Cool then, i'll just have to hit you up for the location of the station you went to when the time comes  ;)

I took the Acura to the one closest to me, and all they did was run codes to pass emissions. There was an older Toyota truck in the bay next to mine they were running pretty hard though, which I guess is what they do for all 80s cars.

That's right. We get the treadmill test. Gotta love them racing your car from a stop to 60mph with the parking brake on.
