Exhaust

About 4 years ago my 88 T-Bird Sports exhaust started to rot off and rather than have pieces fall off a friend and I cut it all off.

All that is there now is the 2 Cats, and the 3rd chamber. Is that 3rd part a Cat or a ler, or dampening chamber, or what?

I have not been stopped for noise and we don't have emissions testing where I am.

Everyone says it sounds great which is why I have not bothered to pay the bucks to fix it. I did buy shorty headers and planned to put on an H pipe and go dual the rest of the way back, just never felt the need to do it.

I have 247,000 miles on the engine and figured I'll wait until the engine needs to be rebuilt before I worry as long as the police leave me alone.

The third part is an actual cat, But do you not get overwhelmed with fumes ?

Did these come with three cats? Mine only had one at the join, before it split back into two pipes. I know it was far from stock, being 15 or so years old at the time, but it did only have the one and had no problems with emissions people checking it out.

Mine had 3 , I dunno what the difference in a "pre cat" and a cat is,  they all had the honeycomb stuff in them ,  but a s guy gave me $80 for the front pipe off my car

I think you would be much happier with a true dual setup, and it can be had fairly cheap, especially if you've already purchased some shorty's. A summit h-pipe is around 115 bucks (last time I looked, anyway) and it is a fairly simple install. Get some flowtubes and lers and dump them before the axle. You will gain a few ponies and have a better sounding exhaust. It will benefit you more if/when (if not already) you decide to do and HO swap.

Fumes have not been a problem.

The main reason, after cost, that stopped me is I am worried about getting the existing stuff off the engine. Bolts that have been in place for 23 years and 247000 miles. I'm worried one gets snapped off and then I am screwed?

I've got a couple buddies who are ready and willing to do it w/me but since it is my daily driver I can't afford for it to be "down" if we snap a bolt. How hard is that to remedy if it happens?

You may have already determined that I am mechanically inept. I can do Oil/Plugs, change/rotate tires, other minor stuff. But that's about it. After that I lean on the kindness of friends and dealers.

you should grab a pair of shorty headers.. that way it doesn't matter if you snap your manifold bolts and you have something to replace them with, plus you will gain a little exhaust flow

Just keep an eye out, deals are out there. Slowly gather up all the parts you need, wait till you have all of them, you and your friends should be able to do the swap in a few hours, it's very simple. I have a spare set of shorty's. They have a hairline crack in one them, not sure if they can be fixed, but they're yours if you can pay the shipping.

As far as snapping off bolts, the only ones I would worry about is the manifold to head bolts. They usually come off fairly easy though, even without soaking them with a solvent.

I have had a set of shorties for over 3 years. Just was holding off until I HAD to do something since financially it is a problem.

I was unemployed from Jan 09 to Aug 10 so we are broke.
