1987 Evtm

I want to propose something here to the webmaster.

Id like to scan the evtm and post it here but counting the cover both front and back as well as pages , it would be 248 pages.

Ive thought about posting 5 or 10 at a time but not sure of how to share them.  I know that there would be a way to PDF them so they are printable in order of page sequence.  Id just like permission to post them a few at a time.

Maybe when its all done, there could be a link here to make available to everyone.

I just scanned the cover on my evtm and it came to about 375kb in jpg form.

As long as there's no copyright information that specifically prohibits redistribution, it shouldn't be a problem to share. I think compiling the whole thing as a PDF would make more sense though, rather than posting a few pages at a time. I've got Acrobat Professional CS at my disposal. If you save as a PDF, I can compile all the pages, put them in order, save it as one big PDF, and optimize it for file size so it will download quicker. Only problem I see is that your scans should probably be @ 150dpi instead of 72dpi. If someone needs to blow up a page to find a circuit number, for example, you can't read it all that well @72dpi/screen resolution. It give us a little more leverage when optimizing too.

yeah,, thats pretty sick aint it?  But since i am pretty sure i am set on landing this new job,, im cutting back on my intenet job hunting and found some time to play.  Im doing spring time yard work and in a minute or two, im going down to install some gutters for a buddy.

How should i approach this........once again for those of us who are slow.

save as .pdf,,( i have the latest Adobe)
save each page and email it to who?
what do i do to address you dots per inch issue,, how do i find out what my scan just produced?

from that point its turnkey and out of my hands,, right?


as for the Copyright,,, i am looking in the front section and see nothing refering to reproduction of this manual anywhere.  But, im sure thats covered when the word "copyright" appears.

actually,,, i think its best i call ford and see if there is some sort of permission slip i need to fill out in order to do this.  the last thing we need is a problem with the very company that made our cars, (ironic i say)

Scanning 248 pages ? how did you do that ? (i´m very interested...a few days i have scanned 350 pages and took me about 5 hours without stopping.....100 dpi...)

I have a HP Digital Sender (at work) that scans pretty  fast and sends to email. The only thing is our email system is limited to 6mb attachments. It could scan 248 pages in about 15 minutes. It scans as a .pdf file.

375k * 248 = 93MB  :eek:  :eek:  :eek:

93,000,000 bytes * 8 bits/byte = 744,000,000 bits
Dial-up @ 50,666bps; 744,000,000 / 50,666 = 14,684 secs
/60 = 244.74 mins
/60 = 4.07 hrs to download all with "perfect" connection.

That's assuming all the pages are as "simple" as the cover.
I bet they're not. More detail = bigger file.
Just how much storage do we have here for attachments?

Maybe you should scan and print a hundred copies of each page, staple them together, call it a "Factory wiring manual" and sell them on eBay for $10 a shot? Others do.  :giggle:

Save the same file as a PDF, and then a JPG, and see which is smaller. Then send that...it won't be a problem to stitch together either one. Far as DPI, when you scan your software will have some settings. If it allows you to adjust the quality, that's where you need to make sure it's 150 DPI. It would be nice to have higher than that, but that really hampers you on dialup. Actually, now that I think of it, this would probably work better if you burn everything to a CD then mail it. That way you can also scan higher.

Does the manual have a copyright? If so, copying it is illegal unless you get written authorization from the author.

If needed, I can host the PDF'd manual. Eric's idea is a good one. You could scan at a higher quality than needed and later reduce it to find a good medium between quality and size. You could have the index separate and divvy up the sections to make downloading quicker.

yes,, the default is 150dpi on my scanner.

I was on the phone with ford yesterday and lost power so that lead to another distraction.

here is what i am doing to obtain permission first off with the ford trademark office.

I and several thousand others are very passionate about these cars that range within the years 1983-1988 and have a need to share our manual information with others who own these fox body cars.  Many owners of the mid 80's cougar and tbird have not been lucky enough to have the factory OEM shop manuals for troubleshooting reasons.  Having said this, I would like to become aware of the process and move forward on permission to share this information on a car that we all feel is worth saving.

There is no intent on circulating this manual for monetary gain or other dishonest reasons.  Our only promise to our members it to share everything we know about these fine cars from its history to general and detailed maintenance.
 
It is my intention to obtain permission from FORD if possible to scan this entire manual and make available on a public forum web site called http://www.coolcats.net .  Within this link there is a ton of research and information on these cars as well as a link to http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com that represents the technical side of the house.  I would rather not proceed with permission from HELM because HELM did not produce this manual.  I would feel more comfortable with the permission from FORD directly if it is possible that i be granted such permission.
 
Thank you very much for taking the time to work with me on a topic that I feel is important enough to proceed in the proper manner for the sake of a breed of car that stands out in your fine history of automobile design and quality.

one thing I use is called a pdf writer.  the way it works is essentially you have a document and you click print document then select print to the pdf writer vs. your regular printer and a pdf file is written for the pages you chose to print.
