metal on the roof
I've been putting metal (or tin, whatever..) on the roof, as the shingles are 30 years old, and I've had a couple of leaks with the monsoon season of late. Doing it all myself...and it's taking awhile, but I'm in no big hurry, as long as it's done by snow time.
I thought I was going to be cool, and use my jigsaw to cut the pieces with, but some of my ideas are great, some are good, and some are plumb shiznitty. This idea was one of the latter, lol.
Anyway, I'm laying the pieces right down on the shingles and screwin' 'em down, no stringers or whatnot. Some folks have said I should've put down 2x2's, other people have said putting them on top of the shingles is just fine.
I'm about half done, but like I mentioned, not in a real big hurry.
Weekend before last, I lost 12 pounds over Saturday and Sunday, working from about 3 or 4 pm till almost dark. Keep in mind, I've got to lean the metal up against the guttering, then climb up, lay it in position, measure, cut, and screw it down all by myself.
It would go quicker if I had help, but I'm happy doing it all myself. :D
32 pieces of 15 footers I have, I think I've got 13 or 14 put on, and it's a 1440 square foot roof.
Why metal? Because I have zero experience with shingles, and don't have the time or to rip off all of the old, and put down new in one day, and try to fight the every-other--day rain and the constant 80 to 90 degree heat.
That, and I've put metal up on a whole slew of pole barns and such. Easy stuff.
That is, until it comes time to cut it...with tin snips, lol.
I've only had one little cut, but it was a bleeder. Probably should've went in and got a few stitches. Didn't have the 100 bucks for my insurance co-pay though, so some super glue and a box of bandaids, and I was back in business.
I'll see if I can snap a few pics tomorrow....there's one on facebook that the woman got...but not everyone here has me added though.
Anyway, this thread is long enough, and 10 am will come too soon, so guten tag..lol. (pics tomorrow)
